How about starting a new multiplayer game with a party like this for those Eddings fans out there:

    Garion - male - Fighter/Mage
    Belgarath - male Sorceror
    Polgara - female druid/cleric/mage
    Silk - male Fighter/thief
    Mandorallen - male paladin (cavalier?)
    Barak - male barbarian

And as a spare or in place of one of the above: Hettar - human male ranger

Or for those Wheel of Time fans:

    Rand - male fighter/mage
    Perrin - male ranger
    Matt - male fighter/thief
    Moiraine - female cleric/mage
    Lan - male fighter
    Nynaeve - female cleric/thief

How does that sound? Anyone fancy making a total BGII conversion? ;)

Hmm, on the subject of making parties based on book characters, here's a party I've been wanting to try out:

    D'Artagnan (male Cavalier)
    Athos (male Blade)
    Porthos (male Fighter)
    Aramis (male Swashbuckler)

Irenicus could be Cardinal Richelieu. Might be worth it for the challenge.

The biggest problem with doing Jordan is that there are so many people who would warrant going into a party (but then, you could always make lots of parties). My take on professions, ignoring any racial or other restrictions on professions, would be:
    Rand dc Kensai/Mage
    Perrin Ranger
    Mat Swashbuckler
    Moiraine mc Cleric/Mage
    Lan Ranger
    Nynaeve dc Thief/Cleric
    Egwene Mage
    Thom Blade
    Elayne Mage
    Aviendha dc Fighter/Mage
    Gawyn Fighter
    Galad Inquisitor
Aes Sedai: various Mages, Clerics. Actually all Mages in WoT are Sorcerers, but with a wider range of spells.
Whitecloaks: generally Fighters, esp. Wizard Slayers. Some would be Paladins (but not many).
Gaidin: different types of Fighters (esp. kensai), Rangers, Paladins.
    Aiel: fighters (berserkers), thieves, rangers
