[IMG]Greywardens, a site dedicated to Dragon Age, has posted an informative article about the sanitary and eating habits of the world of Ferelden. Here's a snippet:

I would have assumed that sugar would not be readily available in Ferelden, due to the fact that the weather is not at all suitable to growing it (since it seems based on the weather around the north of England), however a tattered shopping list in Redcliffe did mention it, along with other items including rouge from Orlais, so sugar might be imported. It is far more likely that the cakes in Ferelden used some manner of honey to sweeten items, as the common person would not be able to afford imported goods. Bee hives can be successful even within a city after all, although there are none seen visibly in the game.

Fruit, although often seen on the tables of nobles, such as apples, is not commonly seen around the taverns and houses of the peasants. Large estates, such as that of the Arl of Denerim notably have large kitchen gardens where fruit trees might be grown as well as vegetables, but very few trees are seen within the general area of the cities, and certainly not fruit-bearing ones.

Interesting facts, or someone who has a little too much time to spare? You decide.
