I think I've seen a forum on this but couldn't find it. The US postal service charges by weight. Most airlines charge for overweight baggage. Their fuel is based on weight per mile so why don't they charge passengers by weight. Then they could afford to be more liberal with their peanuts. Your thoughts.

I don't know about the US, but in Canada, it would definitely be a violation of anti-discrimination provisions in the Human Rights codes.

Plus given that obesity is practically an epidemic in North America, airlines would end up pissing off pretty much every one of their customers. Not good for business...

Having higher standard fares, with a discount for weight under a certain level, might work. But then, since women generally weigh less than men, you'd probably end up with a discrimination complaint based on gender.

    weight discrimination on flying passengers

Is it discrimination if a large passenger can't fit into 1 seat and has to buy 2 tickets if they fill 2 seats? The new airline standard seat is going to be only 17 inches wide. First class has larger seats but you have to buy a first class ticket,
    is this size/weight discrimination ?

A passenger who consumes 2 seats due to their large size, is pretty clear cut that a second seat will be charged. That's a seat that can't be sold to another potential customer.

The charging by weight concept is a bit trickier, and there's really no precedent for it. It might technically be fair, but trying to implement such a thing creates a lot of other issues, several of which have been mentioned already.

Marce said it: Need two seats...pay for them.

Ultimately in the future, space on planes and buses will be designed to be more economically effective and thus the problem will be even more pronounced. Today's city buses are already snug for the average Joe.

I personally only saw it once, that an Obese person needed two seats on a plane. Dunno if that person had to pay for both. But I did see that they needed seatbelt extensions to secure the passenger to the seat.
