I am level 11 currently, and so far my party consists of
Protagonist - Human Warrior (2H specialisation),
    Leliana, Morrigan and Zevran.

Morrigan is the only mage so far and valuable for strategical gameplay, but
I am constantly loosing influence with her, no matter what I do.
I guess I have to replace her with Wynne soon, when she is available.
I like her dialogues nontheless, maybe I'll bribe her with gifts to stay with me ^^.

Leliana is nice, because she is the only rogue good enough with lock picking, and that alone lets her stay in my party. Moreover, as a bard she has pretty good party talents.
I still can't decide if I like her or not, I will have to wait til the end of the game I guess.

I originally went with Alistair as a second tank, but the personality of Zevran is the most interesting one of all characters so far, imho, so he replaces him.
Astonishingly, he is a beast as a damage dealer, though he has to be constantly healed as a drawback.

Shale and Dog are nice, but I find the human personalities more interesting, at least for my first playthrough.
I've got Sten as well, to test him out, but will let him rot in his cell next time :p.
I don't know, but having someone around who killed a whole family including children, isn't very comfortable, even ingame.

These are the companions I have unlocked so far, so I can't tell anything of the still missing, obviously.

    Character I have unlocked
Alister, Morrigan, Leliana, Sten, Buddy (the dog), Wynne

I'm a magi and I find having two magi to be useful, So I go with Alister, Leliana, and Wynne.

I have ice and flame sword active when playing as it provides a good bonus to damage to Leliana and Alister.

I used Sten for a llittle bit but his outlook towards what I do constantly drops. The three NPC in my party and Morrigan all view me as a leader which provides them a bonus skill.

What area did you play through first hannibal555 after the king fell? I went with Redclif and I'm still working on that quest; however, during my quest through Redclif I completed the Magi tower.

    @munchkin blender

I went for the Dalish people first, second was the quest for Shale, then to Redcliffe
where I currently am in search for the sacred ashes

I have a blast playing it, especially the dungeons are well designed and the main quests so far are very good.

Did you go seek the Magi for assistance or did the Connor mom die for your cause?

I used Morrigan, Leliana and Alistair to back up my main character for most of the game. It just felt right story-wise. Sadly, Alisatir couldn't contribute enough, and even though I have sort of the same relationship with him, as I did with Imoen in BG and BG2 (meaning I almost couldn't play without her due to the story, I had to kick while doing the Dalish quest.
I am now using Shale instead of him, and Shale is a beast. Nothing less.

Currently using Alistair, Zevran and Pooch. To be honest I haven't really tried any of the other characters - I used Morrigan for a while when she first joined, but just couldn't resist insulting her at every chance I got. Never tried Leliana or Sten, and I think those are the only other joinables I've encountered so far. My party's zerg rush combined with Pooch's howl to stun everything that isn't a boss monster seems to work quite well.

I use Alistair and my character (fighter soon to be champion) as tanks, with Liana or Zevran as supporting offense and either Wynne or Morrigan as mages. I find Morrigan is by far the best offensive one (when you get her), but wynne is really useful with her heal spells!

I don't like Sten. I gave him a two handed sword, but he takes waaaaay to big a swing when he attacks and doesn't deal a whole lot of damage...

I like to use Lilian, the Dog, and Alisiter or NPC required for request. I send the dog out to search for items in new sections I enter; sometimes he comes back with good equipment, a gift and most of the time nothing. The most powerful staff I have is a staff found by my pooch.

I'm playing a human magi. I am currently at the Magi Tower.

My party consisted of my protagonist, a human mage, who was a beast of a damage dealer.
Allistar, when in massive armor, with shield wall and everything up can withstand insane amounts of damage.
Morrigan, who maxed out every CC possible; so max paralysis, sleep, cone of cold, etc.
and finally, Wynne, who maxed out all the healing spells and took one point in the arcane warrior tree, and only put points into willpower; so basically she just sat there healing/being a mana battery. I messed with her tactics for about 30 minutes, to the point where I could basically just let her do her thing, and she'd never run out of mana, nor would anyone die. She was definitely the most useful of my party I believe, especially a good compliment for a mage leader. With rejuvenate, mass rejuvenate, and spellbloom, my main character never ran out of mana. With some light weight armor on, a small shield, the arcane warrior only +willpower sword, and defensive passives if she needed, she was very hard to kill.
P.S. if anyone makes a mage leader, I advise taking spell burst and stacking spirit damage (there's a staff with +10% and gloves with +20%), it might be kind of cheesy, but you can easily demolish any enemy mage, which tend to be the most deadly adversary for most people I've talked to about the game. There are a few mage bosses near the end of the game, and my main character hit, I believe, a 968 with spell burst on one of them.
Also, as an aside, the sleep tree is really good. Especially for taking out those pesky yellow named enemies; put them to sleep, then cast horror for an easy 200 damage and stun.

I'm currently running with Alistair (sword+shield tank), Sten (two-hander beast), Morrigan (cold spells, debuffs, heal) and my mage (fire spells, crowd control, heal). I initially played with Leliana instead of Sten, but I just didn't find her to be of enough use during combat. At first glance archery seems to be so-so in this game. What I generally do is clear an area, then leave and come back with her to open the chests (yes, I'm that obsessive).

    My alternate party for...
dragon-killing consists of Alistair, Sten and Wynne. I use a bit of a World of Warcraft -like approach for these, in that I tank away with Alistair and heal spam with my character and Wynne while Sten goes to work with his nasty sword. It takes a long time, but it's relatively safe.

I find Lelian to be quite effective with a bow and decent, not the best, with a sword and shield.

My next play through will be with a dual wielding Rogue (Ranger / Duelist). This way the other NPC will be Morrigan, Alister and Wynne.

I'm currently playing with Morrigan (nasty spells, no healing), Allistair (tank, gets killed a lot) and Shale (I really like that character, he keeps reminding me of Ben Grimm. My main is a Rogue city elf Duellist and it's starting to pay off.

I was using Leliana before getting Shale but since I'm playing a Rogue I didn't have much use for her abilities. She's a great character though.

Using a 2-handed warrior main character, Morrigan, Leliana and Wynne. I had Alistair for a while but Wynne was far more useful. Was also going to try out Zevran, but Leliana complements the party better.

If you switch your followers you can get some dialogues and events that you will miss if you stick to the same party formation all the time.

For playing a fighter, so far, I prefer Lianna, Alastair and Morrigan.

I like the dog, though, because he is the 'fastest tank' I got. Great for harassing archers and mages.

For my rogue it is probably Alastair, Sten and Morrigan. Sten only started to shine when he got an iirc Veridium full plate that I liberated from Redcliffe castle treasury, though I also use Lianna instead of Sten as an archer and surrogate rogue. That is more versatile.

I feel with Morrigan's spells, especially her offensive potential, and an archer make many fights relatively easy to handle. I have given my rogue a secondary bow, and in the fights I had last I used Alastair as my 'arrow bait' while Lianna, main char and Morrigan pommelled his attackers from afar, 3-on-1 missile and magic fire can grind down all but the toughest opponents relatively quickly.

Alistair as tank. Leliana purely as a lockpicker to be honest and Wynne for heals.

Most of the damage is done by me, an elementalist mage. I just rip the living hell out of anything, my damage output is stupid... as is my Lyrium Potion usage, but you can't have everything.

I tried starting again as a rogue so I didn't have to have a party member purely for lockpicking, but I found standing there and using a bow to be terribly boring, and none of the party mage NPC's are as fun as the one I made. I can easily leave everyone some way back, and take on a group of 5-6 mobs solo. Pull mobs the right way and get your angles right, then Cone of Cold.. Shock.. Flame Blast.. Tempest.. Fireball.. any leftovers can be Petrified/Stonefisted (which is a ridiculius overpowered single target combo). It's easy as a mage sometimes, your power to incapacitate your enemies is amazing.

@Barmy Army: haven't played a mage yet (except for followers) but they are indeed powerful. I'd just like to point out that rogues aren't meant to just stand there and use a bow. You can get a lot of backstabbing fun in the game if you're into that kind of things. ;)

Leliana of all people is leading my stats for most damage from a single hit - 334. I don't know how she pulled that one out. I think it was from an arrow of slaying. Good archer, that girl.

Yeah and she is totally bi too. My female elf is having dual relationships with Allister and Leliana.
