What is your favorite NPC of each class? (thief, fighter, mage, etc.)

I started with a mage because there are no good mages except Edwin and Dynaheir and I find both vexing. (I actually screwed around with Xan a little but dropped him eventually.) Probably my favorite theif is Imoen, because of her ablilties. (good int. and cha. as well as dexterity)

My favorite fighter is Khalid (his skill is the only reason I haven't dropped him, though.) My favorite cleric is Viconia, because however much I hate her, it still stands that I have not found any other clerics, multiclassed or not.

My favorite ranger is Kivan, bcause Minsc is so annoying and Kivan is so much more skilled. My favorite bard is Garrick (I get a kick out of him.) My favorite druid is Jaheira; sadly, everyone else I've found has worse stats.

Please add why you like the characters as well as the fact that you do.

Xzar is great, who doesn't want to hear "I have become death, destroyer of worlds" in a fight. :D In my curren party I decided to gather all the insane ones, so I also have Quayle, Tiax and Kagan all funny characters.

Quayle (Illusionist/Cleric), Tiax (Cleric/Thief) and Yeslick (Fighter/Cleric), although you can't get them early in the game.

I am surprised no one has mentioned Kagain, probably the best tank in the game.

The sheer number of NPCs in BG compared to BGII is one of the things that makes it great - so much versatility.

That having been said, I try to role play, and so it doesn't make sense for me to list a single favorite, but a favorite for playing good and a favorite for playing evil.

Fighters (along with Rangers and Paladins):

Good: Khalid. You're concerned with Strength, Dexterity and Constitution. There are items to circumvent Dexterity or Strength (but not both simultaneously) in the game. Khalid represents the character that can acheive the highest combination of the three once the gauntlets of ogre strength are acquired. That and the fact that he's a pure fighter and gets slightly better damage and THAC0 than paladins and rangers.

Evil: Tough call, but I'll go with Kaigan. The only problem here is that both his strength and dexterity are somewhat lacking, and you can only fix one of them. Still, with a 20 in constitution giving regeneration he gets my vote over Shar-Teel. Shar-Teel has great strength and dexterity, but has a measly 9 in constitution, and there's nothing you can do about that.

    Clerics and Druids:

Good or Evil: Jaheira. Technically a multi-class, but the fighter levels come in handy for a better THAC0, and at low levels, a multi-class is really on one level behind the single classes. For only good characters, I'll take Yelsick. Viconia is incredibly weak in combat, which usually means she relegated to throwing sling stones, as her high dexterity gives her a decent chance to hit with a missile weapon.

    Thieves and Bards:

Good: Imoen. I don't think anything really has to be discussed about her. The best thief in the game bar none. If you can find a way to fit Coran in your party as well, he's a great archer as well as a serviceable thief.

Evil: Montoron. Tough little guy. Great for backstabbing, although if he's your only thief, you have to spend a lot in find traps. Also for evil parties I usually pick up Eldoth as a decent back-up mage. I typically take a specialist, and Eldoth can fill in the gaps of the few spells my specialist can't memorize.

    Mages:

Good: Ideally, I'll dual-class Imoen into an Illusionist. Dynaheir is fine except she can't cast enchnatment spells, which are some of the most useful spells in the game.

Evil: Xzar definitely is servicable, and an easy decision if you're bringing along Montoron, but I prefer Edwin. He gets a huge number of spells per level, and the only really useful skill you miss out on is Identify, and since Eldoth likely will be coming along, identifying stuff isn't much of a problem.

Regardless of which one I pick (good or evil) I usually pick up a second spell caster - either a bard or multi-class like Quayle - to fill in the spells that my regular mage can't cast.

Xan would have been so cool if he was only a fighter mage and actually had a constitution score ;)

mage = Xan - i love his personality and i generally find his spells more useful as u can find wands to use for the ones he hasnt got ... i hate edwin, always have

combat thief = coran - he is by far the best backstabber in the game, but to be a good general thief u need to get him early in the game

general thief = imoen/safana - hard to pick between these 2 as both have very similar stats and r very good ... imoen is your best friend and safana makes u feel good :)

fighter = khalid - khalid is actually the best tank in the game and is an awesome fighter and i kinda like his personality now

cleric = viconia - simple really as she is the hottest and best cleric in the game :)

ranger = kivan - he is the best ranger in the game and a very competent fighter ... also very useful for sneaking and scouting enemies in the open

bard = myself :) ... out of the 2 npc's eldoth has a better personality but they both suck as bards

druid = faldorn - she can cast far more druid spells than jaheira can and the higher level one sooner than jaheira, so therefore she is the best ... both their personalities suck

Fighter: Khalid. The guy's a beast with ogre gauntlets and I like his stuttering, self-effacing demeanour. Kagain's pretty tough, but boring. Shar-Teel is fun, but has an appalling constitution. If I take her I give her a big sword and a bow and leave her behind Kagain to deal damage while he soaks it up.

Paladin: I usually end up taking Ajantis simply for want of another fighter. He's dull as ditchwater but he does the business.

Ranger: Not too keen on either of them, to be honest. I never found Kivan to be as useful as Coran and Minsc is annoying after a while.

Cleric/Druid: Jaheira. Goes with Khalid and is a decent fighter. Yeslick is pretty cool too. Branwen is boring and I dont like Viconia too much, at least in BG1.

Mage: If good, I use Imoen d/ced to conjurer. If evil, I like Xzar, although Edwin's always good. I like Xan, but you really need a backup mage for the evocation stuff. I like the idea of him as a fighter/mage, by the way. Dynaheir is alright if you want pure artillery, but gets on my nerves after a while.

Thief: Has to be Coran. Awesome archer in a game where archers rule. Cool personality and decent thief abilities to boot. Alora is cute, but when you have Coran there's really no room for her. Safana never really appealed to me. Imoen's alright as a pure thief, but I like to dual class her. Montaron is great as long as you're evil. Never tried Skie because you have to take her tosser boyfriend along to get her.

Bards: I actually really like Garrick. He's a handy backup mage and can use a crossbow and sing. I kind of like his hapless personality and his Monty Python song is great as well. Never tried Eldoth and don't plan to.

Others: Quayle is good as I like cleric/mages, although I'm currently playing a half-elf c/m for eventual transfer to BG2 (stat boosts <3). Never used Tiax, but I might in a future game just to see how he holds up.

    Favorites....

    Fighter-types: Minsc, followed by Kivan
Thieves: Coran, followed by Montaron (I really hate the voices of Safana and Alora). Shar Teel becomes a truly awesome backstabber.
Clerics: Viconia for her voice, Yeslick is the most useful.
Mages: Imoen (I obviously dual her), Xzar is a riot for his comments.
    Bard: None.

I've never used Quayle or Tiax so my input excludes them.

Fighter- Minc & Boo, Kivan too.
Healing type: Jaheira, she heals and kicks butt.
    Mage:......I always make my own.
Theif: Montron, he's so aggrivating, tis disturbing to my domina! I can never get Shar Teel, she always kicks my butt. :(
    Bard: None.

Shar-Teel, like Imoen, can dual-class. I think they're the only two who can do this.

Warriors: Kivan's gruff complaining always cracks me up and he's a great archer. I haven't tried Minsc yet in BG1, but he's hilarious in BG2.

Wizards: I too like dualing Imoen to a conjuror (a wizard with stealth and a bow! ), but Xan and Xzar are funnier, and Edwin is just as good for an evil party.

Priests: I prefer Jaheira w/ darts, but I don't like Khalid :p , so I usually go with Branwen if I'm good, or Viconia if I'm playing an evil party.

Thieves: Coran rules! I even keep an open spot just for him, although sometimes I just play a F/T (named Coran) and dual little Imy once she's gotten at least 60 stealth (95 with boots).

Bards: The bards in this game suck! The only way to get a half-way decent one is to create one yourself, so you could get good INT. Eldoth's poisoned arrows might have been worth it, except that you can't get him until so late in the game, AND he's paired with the most blah  (not to mention annoying) thief in the entire game! Coran is at least worth the wait, and he doesn't have any dead weight dragging behind him. (Though I sometimes wonder what Brielbara would be like as an NPC.) :hmm:

Warriors: I don't really think much of any of them. Either because I haven't used them much (Shar-Teel, Kivan, Ajantis) or their personalities annoy me (Minsc, Khalid).

Priests: Branwen. The only one I can think of that I actually like. Viconia and Yeslick are alright, but I've never really taken them, so I don't know them. I've never liked Jaheira, and Quayle is a gnome. Faldorn looks annoying, so has never been taken.

Rogues: Eldoth is great, and Skie's alright too. Immie's inbetween the two. But my favourite is Alora. Halfling!

Wizards: Xan or Xzar, whichever is the one in the mines. Really, why have two NPCs with names beginning in X? Whichever he is, he's very funny and pessimistic.
