I find lots of fighters works really well.

Here was my most recent party (just beat the game for the first time last night!):

    Me (Gnome Fighter/Illusionist)
    Imoen (Thief 4/Conjuror)
    Kivan
    Coran
    Minsc
    Yeslick

    1) Me (Paladin)

    2) Imoen

    3) Jaheira

    4) Khalid

    5) Xan

    6) Minsc

I sent Dynaheir on a suicide mission (proved useful because she was bait) to get rid of her.

    My fav: Me Elven Fighter/Thief
    Khalid
    Minsc
    Imoen to Vanilla Mage
    Branwen
    Dynaheir

You can set it up so Jaheira dies by sending her off solo and letting her die somewhere. Still allows you to keep Khalid.

Almost every time, I play through as if I'm going to continue in to BGII, so I usually pick characters that make the beginning of BGII make more sense:
    Imoen
    Khalid
    Jaheira
    Minsc
    Dynaheir

Sounds boring, but I'm weird like that. Strange that no one has mentioned Xzar or Monty. I remember I used them way back when I first played BG, but I can't remember how far they made it. I remember them being pretty funny and handy to have around.

Poor Imoen! Always bashed; never respected. And yet so good at what she does. Vanilla with topping! My party was...

    Me (Bard)
    Imoen (dc to mage)
    Minsc
    Kivan
    Viconia
    Yeslick

Dumping Branwyn for Yeslick was the toughest decision. And I think I kept Jaheira, which means somebody up there wasn't there. Minsc? Kivan? Viconia?

I really like Jazhara7's thief party. If I play the game again...

    My fav:
    Me, fighter

    Khalid, Jaheira, Branwen, Garrick, Imoen

I don't like to cheesily split pairs, or I could dump Jaheira (contrary to her husband, she gets less useful as the game advances).

Well, I usually am a fighter type with the standard party: Imoen, Jaheira, Khalid, Dynaheir and Minsc. This is cause I never play BG1 unless I plan on taking the char through bg2 too. For my next party I have a problem, which originates in the fact I also don't like to cheesily split pairs. I wanted to make a bard and his groupies, nl. a male Bard pc with all female npcs. My biggest concern is tanking potential. Jaheira can't be taken due to Khalid being male (unless of course I use the Girdle of Gender changing, I've considered it) and the only other female fighter is Shar-teel. I'm a little hesitant to put Branwen as another tank, but I'm afraid I'll have to.

With a grain of salt: My party ;)

Usually I prefer an allround buildup - thief, mage, cleric, fighter. Works like charm.

It's a shame that so many interesting characters can't be got at until late in the game, when it seems pointless or difficult to take them. Has anyone played the illusionist/cleric gnome who's outside the entrance of Baldur's Gate? Or the malignant short person who wants to rule the world, Tiax?

Even Coran is a problem, since by the time you reach him the game has put most of his thief skills where you don't need them. But if I play the game again, I'm going to try to use some of these "late" characters and see what they're like.

yeah thats really annoying, getting a npc in high level which has his abilities configured and they are now useless is something really annoying

Yeah, I know what you mean about that. I do use Quayle sometimes because I like cleric/mages, although I make sure I rush through the preceding chapters as quickly as possible. Alora is the worst, though. She's so damn cute and seems like a decent thief, but you cant get her until Baldur's Gate. Annoying as I like to dual Imoen early and it's rough doing without thief skills sometimes. *grumbles* ...traps ... so much damn healing...
