    Fae Tactics Review

Fae Tactics knows you've played a tactical RPG before. It knows you're going to go all wobbly with nostalgia at a jaunty, stirring soundtrack; at a main theme that evokes Wild Arms and Fire Emblem.
It knows you're going to crack a wide smile at saucer-eyed, headstrong protagonist Peony and her pet companions. It knows that when it introduces, over a series of tutorialised intro stages, at least a dozen interplaying systems - buffs and debuffs, opposing elements, party synergy - you're going to lap it up like the dehydrated genre aficionado you are.

Fae Tactics is a charming, ambitious homage to classic tactical RPG's with plenty of its own ideas, but it never quite add up to greatness. It fails to explain so much of what's going on under-the-hood that victories often feel unearned and defeats often feel arbitrary. The great presentation and some solid core systems means it stays entertaining in small doses, however. I'd still tentatively recommend it to dedicated genre fans.

    • Charming characters and art
    • Wonderful Soundtrack
    • Engaging macro-level tactical decisions
    • Weak Plot
    • Uneven challenge that rarely finds a sweet spot
    • Unnecessary-feeling focus on minutiae at what feels like the expense of additional satisfying, high-level choices
    Score: 6/10
