I bought and played through Neverwinter Nights way back when it first came out. I remember getting to level 20 before the end of the game. I just recently bought the Platinum Edition that includes both expansion packs. This time I barely made it to level 17 by the end of the first game. I still did all the quests. Was the experience values changed in one of the patches?

I think the scaling system for IWD2 has been implemented here. I'm getting only 3 XP for killing greater fire elementals, and they're causing some real problems!

NWN uses a scaling XP award system similar to IWD2. The amount of XP you get from each fight will vary based upon your level and the size of your party (including familiars, summons and henchmen).

Unlike IWD2, NWN recognizes that certain classes have a hard time at low levels and gives a level adjustment to allow those classes to accumulate XP for fights as though they were of a lower level. the fighting classes have no advantage and thus level the slowest. Wizards and Sorcerers receive a bonus though level 7, thus they will be of a higher level than fighters. If you noticed a difference between you finishing levels, it was probably due to a difference in classes.

There are a number of ways to exploit this system to reach really high levels, but that is beyond the scope of this post.
