I've got a DVD drive on my computer, even though WinXP only recognizes it as a CD-ROM drive. This may be because I never bought a WinXP-compatible DVD decoder as I have absolutely no reason to watch movies on my computer.

I do, however, want to be able to play DVD games on my computer. So, do I need to go and buy WinDVD or similar to do this?

Nope. You only need a decoder if you're planning on watching movies.

To play DVD games you need nothing, if have a DVD drive. To watch DVD movies you need a player with right codecs.

If windows only recognises it as a CD rom drive, then there is a possibilty you need to go to the manufacturers website and d/l the BIOS flash for it

And you shouldn't buy them in any case. There is a reason why MPAA could be called PIGS. :nolike:
