    I have some games that won't run on XP, but I've learned that you have to install Windows 98 in order to dual-boot. A while back, I heard about some sort of 'emulators' that could run within XP to run 98 programs. Is there such a program? If there is, where can I get it?

    What games can you not get to work?

    After years of frustration, I have finally managed to get Might and Magic 6,7, and 8 all Heroes of Might and Magic, and finally Rune.

    Games that I am working on are Theme Park world and System Shock.

    Another good idea would be to perform a google search on the error cords that you receive, when the games crash.

    Virtual PC is what you're looking for, if you don't want to have a dual-boot system.

    For dual-boot, by installing Win 98 first and then Win XP, it should modify the startup options automatically to include both OS's in the boot list. I'm not sure if it does it automatically when you install Win 98 afterwards, you might have to manually edit the boot.ini file.

    Well...I also tried to make my computer dual-bottable, but when I tried to install 98, I got some sort of VIRUS : Boot Sector blahblah y/n. The installation stopped, and after 3 tries, I gave up.

    The disk is probably scratched. IIRC I had that problem once before a long time ago...I re-surfaced the disk and it worked fine. :rolling:

    :confused: 're-surfaced'? Does that mean re-burn the CD? Because I tried it with 2 different 98 disks that I have, and they both got the same message.

    With resurfacing you use a machine to "sand" away a tiny layer of the plastic side of the CD-ROM, the side with all the scratches, and so making the scratches less deep.
    The data is still on the CD, it's just that the scratches distort the laserbeam when it's reading the data, so by resurfacing the CD, the beam will get better access to the data beneath/behind the scratches.

    I've not read anything but ...
    So if you want two OS in one pc ... your file system must not be ntfs , but a flat 32 :] even with that you will get crap ... so if you ask me install XP first , and then 98 , after isntalling 98 don't use it for work or e.t.c only for the GAMES , and only for the games , and when you are done abandone it :}
    this is my advice ... :}
    (Install 95 on Ex ntfs device and see what is crap :D )
    Btw dual-boot ? wtf is that ? i've never heart of it ...

    If you install each OS on a different partition, then you can have XP on NTFS and 98 on FAT32, and both will work very well.

    I used to have Red Hat 7.3 and Win97 each on a hard drive, and each with its own file system. It worked very well.

    I don't recommend installing XP on FAT32, as it's far less smooth than on NTFS. Win98 on NTFS is completely out of the question of course.

    IIRC, XP supports booting from 2 partitions. There should be a way of setting it up after you install both OSs so that you can pick whether you want to start XP or 98. The nice thing with this arrangement is that you can have DirectX 9.0c with XP and 8.1 with 98, thereby ensuring full compatibility if 98 with old games (some of which don't like DX9)

    @ywpark: The last time I had that was when using a BIOS that detects any attempt to write to the boot record as a "virus-like activity". The problem is that every OS tries to do that during install. Check your BIOS settings for a setting to scan boot record or something similar.
