    Are you soloing?

It just take basic combat there and maybe pure thief lacks the power to go alone against them.

Try avoid going melee... I never go in melee with my thiefs... Use a bow and shoot them from the distance... And then let the warriors focus on beating them when they reach him... My own experiences had showed, that thiefs sucks in melee... Or... My own thiefs does ;) ...

Yeah, there's a lot of the lizards in there. And it doesn't get *any* easier the further you go down.

Your first, main objective, is to clear out the first level. Because you can rest starting there, and not have to trek back to Kuldahar.

Load up on offensive spells. If you're playing the original IwD, and do not have HoW installed, then you can make the enemies trail back to you one-by-one. You step forward until you see *one*, and then retreat back a ways and kill him.

If you have HoW installed, then they just zerg rush you all at once. In which case, you can still trail them out a little bit, by retreating back a ways and letting the spells casters fall behind the melee. And the melee guys will come in single file along a wall, if you retreat back far enough.

Gang up on one with your fighters, while your wizard whittles down on the reinforcements as best he can, with cloudkill or fireballs or whatever. Use your defense "buff" spells, like protection against evil and aid and chant.

Retreat back to Kuldahar, if you need to, in order to relearn spells and sell off stuff for potions or whatever.
