Never heard of anime? Asian cartoons meant for adults? (and by 'adult' I do not mean porn) I just bought "Ghost in the Shell" and it was a great movie! So, do you watch anime? What was the last movie/serie you saw? Was it good?

Yeah I watch anime, but not on the tv, since Dutch tv sux, dubbed sailormoon, pokemon, etc..

Last movie I´ve seen was Blood the last Vampire, pretty short, but graphic and story wise was cool, not to mention she waved a katana around :)

Oh, I almost forgot this: DRAGONBALL SUX!!!!

Yeah, I know what you mean, about the dubbed programs... They do the same in German. (I see some german channels on my cable. Was it RTL?) The quality is, let´s just say; from deep down.

Ghost in the Shell was well dubbed :thumb:

A friend of mine tried to get me into watching anime...sorry, not going to happen. I tried some, it's just so...so...

I suppose 'bad' is pretty accurate.

Does "Princess Mononoke" count as anime? That was pretty good. I'd like to see "Spirited Away" at some point.

Generally, though, anime is not my thing. There comes a moment in almost everything I've watched where it suddenly feels like I'm watching a completely different show. I mean, I follow the action just fine, and then the characters start talking about stuff I've never heard of. It just doesn't make any sense.

Maybe the TV programs suffer in the translation, but the stilted, "here's-what-I'm-doing-now-and-why-I'm-so-great" dialog just annoys me to no end. Just do it already, and let me figure out for myself how to interpret it.

Finally, a thread about my favorite topic!

Hell, I live for anime! Sailor Moon, DBZ, you name it. I even watched a bit of Pokemon when I was younger.

I even draw anime! My latest is Super Saiyan Gohan.

Yes, Princess Mononoke is one of the best movies ever made!!! I love it! I live for anime, I collect it too, but my collection's not that hot, at least not yet. Oh yeah, I must suggest that all anime lovers watch Neon Genesis Evagelion (sp?). That rules too, and it's cool because the guy who created it spent some time in the nut house, so it's a bit demented, but it has a meaning!!!

No I don't, but I have friends who do. They've got gigs of harddrive space packed with anime. And if not that, they've got stacks of them burned on CDs. And they usually just watch each episode once. Quite frankly, I don't see why can't they just watch it and delete it.

Nope. Never watched Anime. I keep hearing about it; people referring to hundreds of characters in various threads, to which, I'm utterly clueless.

About the only remotely anime thing I've seen was a La Blue Girl clip. And I'd no idea what it was at the time or what the name was, but for whatever reason, it seemed kind of original.

When they try, the Japanese can come up with some strikingly original plots.

Anime is so common these days I doubt there're many who've not heard of it. I've been slowing down with my my anime sessions lately. Latest anime which I watched was Blue Seed and Patlabor, I think.

The only anime I've watched is Final Fantasy: the Spirits Within and personaly, I thought it sucked. Anime usualy takes things to too unrealistic levels and its hard to realy relate to the characters.

Too bad they don't seem to try very often. That's my other problem with most anime.

    Anime.... let's see,

Gundum series. i like to build models, especially Gundum ones. In fact, i could say that 'modelling business' here (Malaysia, Singapore, Hong Kong and Taiwan) depends heavily on Gundum. Also, the issues in Gundum, the message they try to tell are big issues, deep issues (there are some exception of course). Overall, it is about conflicts between earth population and outter space colonies populations. There is no such thing as who is good and who is evil, there is only difference in beliefs. Some believed that peace should be obtain through these methods and some have other opinions. Good series overall.

Patlabor. Touching stories. The background is in the future, but very close to present. Because robots are largely used so there is a division in the police force that uses robots to deal with 'robotic' crimes, and here comes the Sepcial Division 2. Some detective elements and some everyday household elements mixed. Very real life.

    And finally,
Adult Anime. (need i explain more?)

Does this qualifies as a anime?

really final note, don't watch anime in voice over. Watch it in original voice with subtitles.

[IMG] I sold Anime in the store where I work. Anime was mostly bought by 14 year old people with, sorry, a bit childish manner. This is not an insult, but a fact

    The adults prefer cartoons. :p

Some names I remember are Ghost in the Shell (must be good, it seems) BattleAngel Alita, Geroniman or somesuch. Darn! I still remember 2 names!

[IMG] Looks like my non-Asian Sp mates have little experience with Anime.

Anyway, allow me to put forward my opinion. Anime, like all form of media is divided into the good and the bad. You have bad anime like Dragon Ball Z, etc, etc and you have the really good ones like Trigun.

One should not judge the entire genre of anime to be inferior to books, cartoons or movies by a few examples. Granted, the Final Fantasy movie can be counted as anime and it does leave a lot to be desired, remember that there are movies like Princess Monooke and Spirited Away that really, really should not be missed by anyone who desires a good story. The Japanese have some of the best storytellers ever.

Listed here are some of the anime I have watched.
The Good to the Excellent category:
    Trigun, Escaflowne, Cowboy Bebop,
Hellsing, the Samurai X Prequel Movie, not the main series, Yu-Yu-Hakusho

The Average to the Slightly Better category:
Berserk, Neon Genesis Evangelion, Outlaw Star, Loddoss War(both parts), the Samurai X series, NinKu.

The Horrible to the Below Average category:
Dragon Ball Z( the worst of the worst), Shadow Skill, Flame of Recca( A blatant Yu-Yu Hakusho ripoff), You're Under Arrest( Abysmally boring.

Finally, to clear some things up, Anime is the term used to describe Japanese Animation. Manga describes Japanese comics. Hentai is the the Japanese equivalent of cartoon pornography. Sorry guys, La Blue Girl is a (in)famous hentai show that every anime enthusiast will hear of or watch sooner or later.

Going slightly off-topic here: One should not miss out on Manga as well, if you can get your hands on the translated copies. Over here in Singapore, I'm able to read Chinese, the most commonly used language in the translation of Japanese. Hence, manga is to me what comics about Superman and his pals are to you folks.

There are some awesome manga titles out there:
Lone Wolf and Cub. ( One of the greatest manga ever)

Berserk ( Unsure if it has been translated to english, but this manga is a thousand times better than its anime counterpart and boasts a grand and epic tale of blood and vengeance in a beautifully illustrated mediaevil setting.)

Aegis in the Dark ( Unsure if this has been translated as well)

Battle Angel Alita (Available in English. I know cos I bought the whole english translated set.)

I have read too much manga for me to post every title here. Anyway, hope my post provides some insight on anime and manga! :p
