[IMG] Dr. Laura Schlessinger is (Or was? I don't know since I live in Sweden) a US radio personality. She said that as an observant Orthodox Jew, homosexuality is an abomination according to Leviticus 18:22 & cannot be condoned under any circumstances. The following is an open letter to Dr. Laura penned by a US resident, J. Kent Ashcraft, which was posted on the Internet:

Some of these were used in an episode of "The West Wing", when the President goes off on some extremely conservative radio lady. That scene was just great. :D :D :D

A perfect example of how an objection to certain actions, lifestyles, etc. based solely on religious grounds can often be absurd. Good post, Earl Grey.

Ill agree that this was interesting. IMO you have to wonder about how people can expect such a inflexable set of laws to still apply after more that 2500 years.

    omg.

#4 cracked me up. #10 is a classic, since I understand the whole Kosher thing.

That is totally outstanding. I'll be taking this one to work, most likely.

Two thumbs up for the Teaman. :thumb: :thumb:

That doesn't leave much for me to choose from. I can either own Germans or Belgiums. I don't want either of them.

During the Formula 1 grand prix of England (on a Sunday, for those who don't know), a man walked on the track with a big sign saying: 'Read the bible, the bible is always right.' He was obviously trying to bring people to christianity, and that means he was working, does that mean they can kill him? Now that I think of it, the people who work most often on sundays are preachers, during church on sunday morning. Should we kill them all, not only for working, but also for telling us rules from the bible, which they themselves do not even keep. ;) :p

    yep. Earl its funny,
Here is an easy to browse version of Leviticus, for those of you who might have more question for Dr Laura :shake:

For instance I have this question to Doctor Laura.

In Lev 25:21 I am told that "the LORD will command his blessing upon me in the sixth year, so that the field will bring forth fruit for three years". I am unclear wheter this means that using pestisides will hinder the LORDS work or not?

There's nothing like selective religious observation, is there? That's the main reason I broke with the religion of my upbringing and turned in a new direction.

Sometimes I feel so ashamed for being a Christian. Some of us can't seem to accept Matt 5, 6 and 7.
Lots of the litle laws in leviticus, numbers and deuteronomium are of no more use.

OK, MoN, what verses are you referring to? I don't have a Bible handy to look them up myself.

Fortunately, most Jews - even the Orthodox - recognize when certain "laws" are no longer relevant to the society at hand. Trying to pick and choose is the "selective observance" I was objecting to.

So that means that it does not matter if we are faithfull Christian or not, since going to heaven is predestined, because the letter says that God does not get swayed from his plans for you, no matter what you do.

As Paul writes in Romans 9:14-29.

    Hello? What about Kant?

 I simply do not have the time to correct all the mistakes in the above posts.

Do you really think that Christianity is that stupid? Really? Great minds like Luther, Augustine, Pascale, Jonathan Edwards, Thomas Merton, Abraham Kuyper ... all were total idiots, ya think?

Maybe, just maybe it takes a little more thought to understand the Bible. Maybe the law has been fulfilled, but has not passed away (not a dot off an "I" or a line through a "T" ... gotta talk to you in private MoN! ;) )

Maybe, before the Law and beyond the Law there is a code written into nature, a natural law that defines the will of God as to what is right and wrong.

Maybe homosexuality is a sin, but so is pride, bitterness, envy ... and all of us need grace.

Maybe there are some very good reasons why we need to be predestined, like the fact that we are dead in sin and unable to choose God without help.

Maybe, just maybe Christianity is rational.

But then again, maybe I'm an idiot who actually believes this stuff and should be written off they way all of you have written off the rest of the Bible.

(This is tongue in cheek, but I hope you get my point. Dr. Laura does not represent everyone, but then again, the post at the top, while funny, is a gross simplification. I could go point by point through the various passages above and show how they are fulfilled in the person and work of Jesus ... but I simply don't have the time here at work. :good: )

@Mathetais I was under the impression that Orthodox Jews have many disagreements with most other branches of christianity. Are you sure that you would defend all parts of Leviticus, except if you are an Orthodox Jew? Anyway having Heathen Bondmaids are fulfilled in the person and work of Jesus?

I think a[edited "the" to "a" for Earl :) and from what I see, we agree on the twofold points, just with different wordings] point of this joke is not to prove that religion is a fraud and the bible written by mindless people, but more that it can be mindlessly used by people like Dr Laura. And that Gods words are indeed eternal, but Gods words through man written in text and translated for generations can be far streched by those same mindless people like Dr. Laura.

[IMG] The point of the joke can be several things. For me it is twofold.
    - Firstly the danger of interpreting religious scripts in a literal sense as the word of God. This applies even if they are meant to be taken literally.
    - Secondly it shows the hilarious consequences of taking what is nothing but the morals and ethics of a society that existed many millennia ago as the unchanging and absolute truth.

I believe that everyone is free to accept whatever principles he wants and live by them, at the end everyone is judged by something greater than our minds can know comprehent and even perceive. So maybe he looks crazy and misdriven to us but then again we look crazy and blasphemers to him at the end he/we see who was right or wrong. Untill then he can do whatever he thinks ok as long as he (or others like him) does not meddle with me

[IMG] I think what gets Mathetais' goat -- and mine -- is the use of a straw man argument / position. This joke (which even I think is funny in a way) says, essentially :look at what stupid things those Judeo-Christians believe" and proceeds to list of a series of things we do not believe -- it is an unfair, illogical, pseudo-erudite portrayal of something we consider to be sacred. As Mathetais said, Christianity is rational -- as in all things, apparent condtradictions have valid, logical, and fair explanations.
