Basically, what factors into it? I know strength effects both to hit and damage with melee weapons, and dexterity effects to hit with missile weapons, but what happens in the case of using a thrown weapon that can be toggled between melee and missile? Does THAC0 also toggle between dexterity and strength depending on how you're using it?

This also applies to some of the items in the Item Upgrade Mod, specifically the throwing spears. So take Valygar for example. If I give him a throwing spear, is he going to get a bonus based on strength, dexterity, neither, or both? Same thing with Korgan using the Dwarven Thrower.

IIRC, it works thus: DEX modifies your thrown THAC0, and STR adds to your damage only (if it's high enough). Used as a melee weapon, STR is the key stat, DEX isn't used at all.

I think throwing weapons rely purely on strength while regular missile weapons use dex

I think thrown weapons use STR for THAC0 and damage too, I will check soon. Slings are entirely different though.

    THACO :

    - The bonus to THACO from (high) STR applies only to melee weapons.

    - The bonus to THACO from (high) DEX applies only to missile weapons (all the bows, slings, darts).

    - The thrown weapons (daggers, axes, hammers) use only the bonus to THACO from STR when used as melee and only the bonus to THACO from DEX when used as missile.

    DAMAGE :

The bonus to Damage from STR applies to all the melee weapons,to the thrown weapons when they are used as melee and to the melee weapons created by spells (like the Flame Blade etc.).

But there are some exceptions here. The bonus to Dmg from STR applies also to :

    a) Throwing Axes and Hammers (but not Daggers), even when they are used as missile (except from the axe Azuredge)
    b) Non magical Darts
    c) Arrows of Biting
    d) ALL the magical bullets and Bags of Plenty
    e) Sling of Seeking (as stated in the description).

    [IMG] Hi,

I have noticed that even while using regular slings (and not the sling of seeking), STR bonus is added to damage - do any here see this as well? This makes slings a truly powerful weapon in the hands of strong and dexterous fighters, as opposed to bows or crossbows.
