I borowed BG(+TotSC) to a friend of mine and he says the game randomly crashes or throws him out, usually very soon - like in five minutes or so. So I was hoping someone here would have an answer...
He made the full install, has the latest patch, His OS is Windows 98 (not SE) and he has a Voodoo 3 graphic card.

BG seems to run best on nVidia graphics cards. Reinstalling the game and disabling 3D acceleration may help.

AFAIK, 3dfx cards suck at OpenGL which is why he shouldn't really use that accelerator in hardware mode to run the game.

I have the same experience, especially with BGII.
With voodoo3, using the default OpenGL driver, I encounter severe problems.
However, both games run perfectly if I use 3dfx-installed opengl driver.

Since we are talking about BG I it can't be a graphic acceleration problem. There are several possibilities why BG I might crash. Ask your friend when it exactly crashes and whether it crashes after the same time played or upon entering a certain area (e.g. if it crashes while a movie is running - rest or intro - then it could be a via chipset problem)

You should also try and search the archives, that way I figured out that my BG I crashes due to a chipset problem.
