    Farmers watch the sky uneasily,
wrinkles taut and foreheads grim -
they say the clouds grow greyly dim
and all the air turns brisk and breezily
the day that Spring unhilts its sword:
    The Golden Horde.

    Children, hid in basements drearily,
    barred against the coming storm,
watch the sun cast, clear and warm,
the shadows of a calamity -
thus shattered is the silver cord:
    The Golden Horde.

Fields of wheat and rye and broccoli
    tremble slightly in the wind,
as if to mark where to begin
    the crossing of the riverly
    and muddied Rubiconic ford:
    The Golden Horde.

Then all at once! So quietly
    dozens, hundreds, thousands, more
and endless more burst in and soar
    among the fields so splendidly,
    impossible their flight to ward:
    The Golden Horde.

The sky lights up so yellowly -
and oh! the sound, the dreadful rings
that echo from their million wings
are quite enough to drive one battily!
Their flights no hiding place afford:
    The Golden Horde.

Then at last, like an eternity,
the cloud swoops through and passes by,
and every farmer stops to sigh
and checks to see if maybe possibly
    something had survived their sword:
    The Golden Horde.

No one knows why so locustily
the swarms of golden troops advance
or what fell trick of circumstance
    should drive them on...but verily,
    beware the butterflies that roared:
    The Golden Horde.

How can I follow that up?? :D

The path before me is long and lonely,
My thoughts and myself continue only.
Such emptiness in my soul I feel,
So separate from everything percieved as real.
    Single, empty, or simply alone,
Very different from the love I'd known.

    We'd parted long before,
With pain I try to ignore.
    We walked in opposite ways;
    Said farewell in dimming sunrays.
Then you went along one path,
And I another, to face alone life's wrath.

What is it you think now?
Do you yourself one tear allow?
Or do you walk with head high,
Too proud to even say goodbye?
The path I walk is dark and steep,
But tis not myself for whom I weep.

And how can I follow THAT up?

More than just acquaintances, but something less than friends -
for comfortable convenience we leave matters undefined.
The casual indifference of our weekly tete-a-tete
tears the tattered edges of the truce we undermine.

It's not as if we both aren't rightly wary of the risks
of poisoning the possibilities we cultivate.
But precious ambiguity holds perils all its own,
and time grants no forgiveness to the ones that hesitate.

It's only fair that I cannot discern your motivations -
in equal measure I've invested deep in my disguise.
Perhaps it's just as well that we restrain our inclinations -
at least that way our friendship serves as consolation prize.

Yet listen to the way our voices harmonize their song -
antagonistic brushstrokes on a canvas flush with paint.
This paralyzing puzzle that we struggle to prolong
resists our best attempts at resolution or restraint.

Late at night I toss and turn, tormented by the absence
of concrete indications of our camouflaged desires.
The concentrated focus of our indistinct emotions
guarantees the friction that inflames unwanted fires.

I've seen the times your eyes will lock and then unlock with mine,
an interrupted smolder like the flow of silken steel.
Perhaps you flee from kindness, or from fear, or maybe both -
'cause, truth be told, I can't convince myself what I should feel.

Jeeze, i feel like such an ammetour (sp?) o well maybe you can give me a few pointers :D

    I saw you today,
    as you walked by
My sweet angel that makes my heart fly.
    You say hello,
    as i almost faint
For the angel has a voice.

    I say you today,
    as you walked by
My sweet angel who makes my heat fly
    You saw me too,
    and turned around
then swept my feet off of the groud!
    We talk for a while,
    and then you say,
"Maybe I'll see you another day."

    I saw you today,
    as you walked by
My sweet angel who makes my heat fly
    You walked and walked
    and never stopped,
but looked me in the eye.

    I'll see you today,
    as you walk by
My sweet angel that makes my heart fly
    But what will you do?
    Will you stop and chat?
Or turn you back like a dirty rat?

    I'll see you today,
    as you walk by
My sweet angel that makes my heart fly
    Will we kiss?
    Will i finally know bliss?

    I'll see you today,
    as you walk by
My sweet angel that makes my heart fly
Will you see me and turn around?
    Making my heart spiral down?

    I'll see you later,
    as you walk by
My sweet angel who makes my heart cry.
    I'll cry for joy,
    I'll cry for sadness,
    Until i see you again.

    I'll see you later,
    as you walk by
My sweet angel who makes my heart cry.
I love you alot and I hope you see,
I'd do anything for you to love me.

    I might not see you
    as you walk by,
My sweet angel who makes my heart cry.
    I got over you,
    though it took long.
And i cannot say that is good.
You were my first, sweet angel of mine,
    first love
    and first decline.

    I saw you today,
    as you walked by,
but my heart didn't cry of fly.
    So here's to you,
    sweet angel of mine,

    I'll see you again,
    as you walk by,
and i know that you'll be fine.
    Now i must part
    at this bitter-sweet adieu
    don't forget me,
    I'll always remember you.

Great use of repetition, Tigress! (But I'm an amateur too, so what do I know?) You use seeing and walking and angel regularly, giving it an internal rhythm. When you recite it, say it really quickly so that the whole stream flows without slogging. I like your first verse best, because "voice" has no rhyme - making the word stand out even more.
But please, please, please change the line about "a dirty rat". Both "dirty" and "rat" scar the angelic imagery. The only dirty angels I know are from Home Alone.

Scarring the angellinc imagry is kind of the point, due to this was an actual experience i was trying to capture the stage of the episode where i felt like he was a piece of (/me clears throat) "poop" i would however consider changing it back to the origanal text : "Or turn your back like a rat?"
    what do ya think?

It just sounds like something out of a Dr. Seuss book - and jarring, because the rest of your poem doesn't sound like that. Besides, the rest of your poem uses human and divine imagery - using an animal metaphor doesn't fit. (Neither would, uh, your throat-clearing image.)

But it's tough to find elegantly disdainful words to rhyme with "chat". Rat? Bat? Gnat? Fat? Spat? I have no idea what would work better. Maybe "rat" is the best option available.

    Hey, it's your poem!

    [IMG] A simple thought.

An idle thought sits on a rock,
    And gazes out to sea.
he sits and thinks about himself,
And what he'll come to be.

Should he be a great idea,
The source of a great invention.
Or should he be a word that's spoke,
    without infliction or intention.

The thought sits upon his rock,
And watches the clouds pass by.
    A seagull passes overhead,
And he gives a silent sigh.

The little thought was all confused,
As he gazed along the shore.
He thought himself all up! They said,
So now he is no more.

    Tides

The tide rolls in as the Bells chime the sweet music of rejoycing,
they do not hear the sounds of mourning.
The waves carry with a sorrowful tune,
that won't be heard but 'till noon.
Te low tide comes and ironic still
    brings happiness and rejoycing
as Bells chime to sounds of mourning.

Each morning the first thing I do is pray -
"Lead me not into temptation today" -
but I find enough temptation on my own.
Though I may be sincere today,
    the icy hand of yesterday
still harvests poisoned seeds I once had sown.

Each evening the last thing I do is pray -
"Forgive me for how I've failed today" -
but each nightly litany runs much the same.
Though sin may leave my spirit pained,
my vices have me closely trained,
and I find my past is difficult to tame.

Well, I'm an amateur when it comes to poems. So here's a small piece which summarizes the storyline for my main (and massive) project- Legend of Shura 1: Son of Strife.

Let me know what you think, eh?

Song of Violence, Part 1: Son of Strife

A child’s hands grasped these blades
A boy’s will made them death
    Under dual arcs of steel
    A mortal fiend’s last breath
    Then
The man called Violence earned his name
    Reborn
    Countless lives he will steal

Across the land he wrought carnage
    Selling his skill
Warriors, rulers and beings of an ancient age
None of them could face Darkness’s rage
    And none he wouldn’t kill

    An ancient guardian’s
    Retributive test
    Drove the man named Violence
    Fleeing to the West

There he met the Demon’s son
Out of five he was one
    The Icy North ran free
    Silver blood a cascade
The Northern folk no longer to be

But still his bloodlust was not sated
He turned on those who thought they wielded
    The man named Violence
    A tyrant’s blood mingled with a hag’s
    The north’s snow turned black

    In a kingless land
    He shed blood and tears
    Conflict and battle without end
An angel’s grace from which he went
    Being the weapon
    That felled the father
    Of the Demon’s son

Heaven’s decree fell on the Demon’s son
    Knights, Priests and an Archon
The Five against a deity’s will
Yet the Demon’s son triumphed still

A kingless land was kingless no more
Of the five now there were none
No longer was there a Demon’s son
A fiend of sanguine lust ruled
    Beside a Demon King

The man named Violence left his friend
    Under a glittering sky
    Of ebony velvet
The man named Violence went forth again

Hi, I'm new at poetry writing so...(this follows no rhyming scheme)

A Letter For Those Who Knew Me

    To whom it may concern
If you seek answers then put this down
There ar no answers for you,
    Only me.
I know now what I finally long for.
    A release,
The freedom I have yearned for,
The freedom I would kill for.
    Just an escape
    From...
    Well look around.
    From everything
    Plagues of the world
Yes, that is why I run.
    I hide under my bed
    Yearning for that voice
    That soothing voice.
I do not care who it belongs to
Just as long as they welcome me
Be it devil or angel I do not care
    I will go.
    I will heed that voice.
I would not care if my next moment,
    That sweet moment,
    I am flying among flames
    Or clouds.
    Just as long
As I am no longer of this world.
I dream of that as I write these words.
    Plain and simple,
    The words of a convict,
    A felon,
    A dying man.
    Farewell.

    Just a quicky ;)

day falls and sheds her skin
casting off her cloak of light
    only to mask herself again
in the starry mantle of the night

    daytime over, night matures
    crickets singing in the dim
    their gentle calls an overture
to the beauty of her figure slim

    pinprick lights the heavens mar
    gentle moon waxing slow
on the rise to location far
to its full it will grow

    onwards does the night progress
    cricket song replaced with bird
    nightingale, a soft caress
its call uttering not a word

    the morning comes, cycle done
now the yellow moon does wane
arisen is the new red sun
    and day awakes, yet again

[IMG] Not sure if i am considered an amiture(sp) if i have been published 3 times (well twice... the third is on the way...), but oh well. I'm not sure how to follow many of these. (and erebus... i use a free hand style alot of the time... there is nothing wrong with that)

    Out Side Your Gates

I have hurled myself up against your walls for far too long.
I feel all hope begin to expire on your fortress strong.
I am broken and torn, lying outside your gates.
Will you come pick up the pieces that are my heart?

A mere shadow of my former self, I lasted longer than even I expected.
Not knowing weather the walls that you have erected are obstacle or true defense.
I am battered and bruised, lying outside your gates.
Will you help to restore me to what I once was?

Pausing to rejuvenate some of my spirit that was lost in my struggle.
Feeling hope ever fading, yet never gone.
I stand on lookout, wounded and sore, standing outside your gates.
Will you come out to ease my pain?

    Wandering lost and forlorn
I am waiting to be reborn...

My mind, full of shadows and fear
letting go of all that was once dear...

    Offering up a passionate prayer
but no one to hear, no one to care...

He slips and slides around my brain
Manipulating thoughts, until I am insane...

Always deceiving, knowing freely I must come
Praying and pleading, I try not to succumb…

My body, weary, only an empty shell
nothing but my tainted soul to sell...

Then, careening out of the night
Demons and Devils of great might...

They surround me with their infernal glee
soon, too soon one of them I will be...

My will surrenders, my soul dies
not with screams, only a soft sigh…

    Wandering lost and forlorn
I am yearning to be reborn.

    gentle beat of tiny hands
against the earth of all the lands

    moistened kiss of heavens high
from their ashen clouds will fly

gentle drop will fall to ground
a giant wave without a sound

a splattering against a roof of tin
will rise to a deafening din

tatoo of noise, a wet ballet
percussion written to a private play

the band plays on against the sky
    deafening roar of thousands rise

till the thunder and lightening roars
the echo of the rain storm wars

    water flooding lowland paves
    liquid crashing down in waves

the tumult meets its highest peak
and slowly recedes till its weak

the rain slackens and begins to fall
no longer in a deadly pall

    the chaos falls under reign
sweet kisses leave their wet stain

against our skin, our house, our street
the loving wet meets our feet

    giving life, never to stay
sweet sweet rain, don't go away

This is a song I wrote, I guess you can count it as a poem...

    Into Insanity

    So far beyond my reach
I had to set it free
Now I get points and stares
For something I had to do
    Now I’m just standing here
    Thinking how I screwed up

    [Chorus]
    I’m falling slowly
    Into insanity
    I’m losing my grip
    On reality
    I threw away a chance
    All for this

    Everyday I wake up
    And promise myself
    That I won’t look back
To the life I left behind
    Then I saw you…

    [Chorus]
    I’m falling slowly
    Into insanity
    I’m losing my grip
    On reality
    I threw away a chance
    All for this

It all started coming back together
    Saying words I’ve said before
    And you set it free
    You unlocked the cage
    Which allowed the hell return
But I still want to be with you

    [Chorus]
    I’m falling slowly
    Into insanity
    I’m losing my grip
    On reality
    I threw away a chance
    All for this

I’m going over all the old moves
    The forgotten is remembered
And I could feel the pain coming back
Cause you brought it all back to me

    [Chorus]
    I’m falling slowly
    Into insanity
    I’m losing my grip
    On reality
    I threw away a chance
    All for this

    I’m just waking up
From a nightmare I just had
    And I’m asking
    When and how
Did I get myself into this
What did I do to live in this hell
    Over again

    [Chorus]
    I’m falling slowly
    Into insanity
    I’m losing my grip
    On reality
    I threw away a chance
    All for this

    Well I know I can’t fight it
So might as well just live it
    This hell…
    All over again

    [Chorus]
    I’m falling slowly
    Into insanity
    I’m losing my grip
    On reality
    I threw away a chance
    All for this
