Im getting ready to play icewind dale for the first time, and am thinking about making a cleric/mage to fill the roles of both of those..he/she can cast combat spells during combat, and heal the party in between.
Ive played through BG2 and really liked having Arie on the team...is this a good idea in IWD?

Well considering you gotta make the entire team in iwd1, you might want to have more than 1 character. Easiest way to make a durable team is to make 4 characters: fighter, fighter/thief, cleric, and mage. and then you can add on two characters of whatever you want after that.

For first time through i recomend 4-6 characters on team (you will not be able to pick up NPC's like in BG1-2), and try to keep as many different 'roles' on the team as posible filled. like one of each of the four main classes, like mentioned above.

Also singleclassed spellcasters get higher levels spells faster, and is usually considered better. where a multiclass like cleric/wizard would always be lower in levels compared to a pure class, thus not gaining as much high level spells. This "gap" between a pure class and a multiclass increases the later in the game you get. So i would really recomend keeping one pureclass spellcaster of each arcane (wizard) and divine (cleric/druid). A Multiclass cleric/mage is a interesting addition though.

Save that, dont listen to what any of the powergamers here say and just make a team that you belive to be fun to play!

edit: Also disregard my spelling untill i have at least 3 or 4 edits.

Agreed. Do what you'd like, and a cleric/mage would absolutely be effective in IWD. Just keep in mind that 1) melee rules in IWD, and 2) there aren't so many scrolls lying around, so some people with more than one mage have reported getting a bit frustrated. Otherwise choose what you'd like and have fun!

If you decide to make one I'd recommend making a Gnome Cleric/Illusionist to gain some extra mage spells.

You'll also find a very good helmet that only Gnomes and Halflings can use. If you combine it with an Elven chainmail (random item) you'll have a really good AC. This will be a great help when you need to get in to the thick of things and cast spells such as Cone of cold.

    Great suggestion there by Elvenblade.

I like Illusionist/Clerics (check out the thread in the Throne of Bhaal forum about the hardest character to kill), but you need to love spells to love these guys.
