I've always been surprised at how unknown the Bone series seems to be, especially here on the BoM. Maybe everyone's just hiding?

It's a nine-volume series that starts out comically, but grows into a fully fledged epic. Well worth a read. There's a video game of two volumes (by Telltale games, they guys behind Sam and Max and the new Monkey Islands), and apparently a movie is coming out. Since all nine volumes are readily available here in New Zealand's public library, I would presume it's readily available elsewhere as well.

So, has anyone else read this series, or am I more or less alone here...?

Why, yes, Jeff Smith's work is very good. I loved the series from the get-go and collected all of them, which is quite unusual for me...
