Well, I suppose it was only a matter of time...

US eyes collection of college-student data

I wonder who needs to be aware of the fact the kid graduated college to begin with. When that graduate out of this mythical 20% (the article makes reference to some 20% of college students who transfer twice or more and how this is a problem for reporting of dropout rates) goes to apply for a job (or Grad. school), they're going to know where they graduated from, and be able to supply the interviewer with transcripts, certifications and degrees.

This system is completely unnecessary, since grads already supply this information to the relevant people. There is absolutely no need to get some huge database involved.

At any rate, the real issue here is "Why the hell is the government collecting this information?" Universities and colleges already know who their students are, given that students have to enroll. But why should the government start collecting lists? Churches and synagogues know who their members are too, but the government doesn't - maybe we should start listing out all church members too! No Sunday School Child left behind!

The US government has already screwed up the public school system here with its testing and political football. But hey! Let's let them screw with our University system too!!

 

i have been under one kind of surveillance or another long since. My credit card numbers, my class hours, my class progress, my locked suitcase that is opened without my acknowledgement after went through the custom, etc. But then i am foreigner who pays highier tuiton fee than Americans to study here, so i don't really have any right to object anything about it.
