I assume you mean CRPG here. Well there is only one option here for me and it's Planescape Torment no other RPG:s have even come close to the feeling in that game.

Well the choice is simple for me, Baldurs gate II is the game i would say is the greatest crpg ever created, yes bg 1 was good, but bg 2 took it to another level in many ways. But planescape torment is an masterpiece also, so these two games are probably two of the greatest.

Plancescape: Torment. No argument. Next in line probably Fallout 1 and 2. Seems Interplay has the RPG market cornered.

I'd say Planescape Torment's the best closely followed by Baldur's Gate II. A small gap and then comes Fallout I. Then comes a whole empty space before the other CRPGs.

For me it's Knights of the Old Republic. Beautiful graphics, great gameplay and, unlike most RPGs, I found myself caring what happened to the NPCs (except Bastila of course - she stank).

It is a very hard decision, I find PST and BGII sharing the top spot. They both excel at different things while still being great at what the other one excel at. I would also put KotOR sniffling them in their rear, it is a bit too short and too easy but the gameplay is awesome, storyline kicksass and very interesting NPC's. Its buggyness pulls it down a bit.

The title of "the Best RPG of All Time" goes to Final Fantasy 6 and Baldur's Gate 2, IMO. Shared position. :D

I will join the Planescape: Torment group and I don't think that this choice needs an explanation.

And then BG I, can't forget the first RPG I ever played.

What? No one has nominated Ultima 7? Or the Quest for Glory series? U7 (parts 1 and 2) had a long storyline, a huge world, and heft enough to throttle even the best DOS system. And the QfG series had a sense of humor and personality that BG2 or PS:T never matched.

Or maybe Morrowind - its politics and theology are thicker than its special-effects water. The plotline is thin, but its world is more detailed than PS:T's.

Oh, OK. I s'pose that, all factors considered, the BG2 saga (including ToB) beats U7, QfG, and Morrowind. But barely!

I could say more, but if I need to choose ANYWAY: Baldur's Gate (with Tales of the Sword Coast, but this doesn't really matter)

Planescape Torment. If you don't understand why, play it.

So far BGII+ToB is still the best

Planescape: Torment, closely tied to BG2.

    The Quest For Glory series.
Final Fantasy 7. (I was not overly impressed with the rest.)
The Hordes of the Underdark single player module deserves an honorable mention (though barely).

What?!! I can't believe nobody's selected the best RPG ever - Diablo!

Well, OK, maybe not. :p Seriously, BG2. I might have picked PS:T, but my problem was that I screwed it up for myself by following a walkthrough too closely; I might have to try it again though, since I've basically forgotten most of it by now.

Bah. Ultima 5. Every person in the game had a daily routine that they followed. Ships were sailable; boats were useable, but you take damage in the deep ocean; horses were rideable, wandering monsters on land and sea; many hidden things to find; the moongates; dungeon entrances on the surface that led to many-levelled dungeons whose lowest levels disgorged into the underworld; mongbats; and an epic story. Fantastic.
