Are berserkers basically fighters that can go berserk but lack ranged weapon specialization?

Other than those two differences, can a berserker grandmaster weapons and use the same armor as a fighter? I wanted to dual wield axes with my imported fighter. I am not too worried about him using ranged weapons so I was thinking berserker for the extra ability, but wanted to make sure he can grandmaster weapons like a pure fighter.

    Thanks

Also, how long is the berserker winded for after berserking?

He can achieve grandmastery, no probs. Berserker is probably the most powerful fighterclass for melee if you consider that he has high armour and the powerful berserk ability.

I dont really know how long he is winded, 8 rounds or something like that?

Usually, by the time he gets winded, the battle is over. So it's no big deal to stand around waiting for him to become "unwinded". It doesn't take long at all.

The more important question, I think, is what "becomes winded" means. What's the bad side to becoming "winded"? Do you suffer a Thac0 or AC penalty? I've never known.

For your character berserker is obviously the superior choice compared to plain fighter, the berserker disadvantages won't matter to you.
Dualwielding and ranged combat don't mix well (switching from one to another requires entering the inventory) and even if you want to switch to ranged you won't need bows since +++++ in axes applies both to melee and throwing axes.

I don't recommend putting more than ++ into dualwielding since your thac0 will become so good that the remaining penalty for the off-hand won't matter, better use the remaining proficiency points for specializing in a blunt weapon type for enemies immune to slashing weapons.
