I have played a non multicalassed asassin and realised that with a katana or two handed sword together with the use of asassination you can dish out huge amounts of damage in a coupple of seconds, more than my sorcerer actually (tho it's on a single target).

So are a asaaain superior to a figther for damage you would still need a tank ofcourse.

Honestly, assasins aren't very powerful in ToB at all. The x7 backstab is nice in theory, but bosses can not be backstabbed. Normal enemies can be backstabbed, but there is really no point in doing so as normal enemies are a complete joke anyway. I would suggest a multiclass fighter/thief instead. Fighter HLA's are uber powerful in ToB, much more than the weak thief HLA's.

Plus, fighter/thieves can last A LOT longer in combat.

I have to agree with Sorun. It would initially seem like x7 vs. x5 backstab would be a huge improvement, but in reality it isn't. Like he said, you can't backstab bosses, nor anything that isn't approximately humanoid in size and shape.

In SoA, until you get to level 18, your backstab is exactly the same as any other thief. You also have to consider where you use backstabs throughout the game. I tend to target things like enemy spellcasters, and mind flayers. Those things are usually killed with a x5 backstab, and the only thing x7 will do is blow them to chunks instead of just killing them. From my experience there are few times in the game where the x7 backstab makes much of a difference. Most things that you would kill with a x7 backstab can only be killed with a x5 backstab.

The true advantage with the assassin is actually with the use of poison, and there is merit in taking the assassin for this. The poison damage is guaranteed (targets can make a save which halves the amount of damage, but there's no way to avoid it completely), and deals out considerable damage, especially at higher levels.

Finally, I also agree that a multiclassed F/T is among the best classes available - extremely versatile, and by ToB you really have the best of both worlds.

In the earlier levels, if you want to lay low because of low hit points or whatever, use the Arrows of Biting and activate your poison ... VERY painful.

unfortunately, that's not the case. There are certain enemies which are immune to poison, an example of this being BG1's dread wolves.

Yes but luckily the thief is able to adapt to such situations and thus able to find a way around that. One enemy that can resist poison doesn't matter that much, as long as you have a few tricks up your sleave ...
