[IMG] I'm re-reading Gulliver's Travels for the umpteenth time and it struck me we have never (at least not in my time) had a poll on which end we break boiled eggs in.

In the land of Lilliput, being a big-endian was a crime at the time of Gulliver's visit, after the emperor's grandfather or somesuch had cut his finger while breaking an egg.

I usually break an egg in the big end. Which, by Lilliputian standards, would make me a traitor. ;)

Oh, and if you have never read this gem, and you're not positively allergic to political satire, you really owe yourself to read it soon! :D

I can't understand big-endians. The entire construction of an egg lends itself to little-endianism. All you need to do is look at your average egg cup to see which side is supposed to be up.

I've never seen an egg cup being used around here.

With that said: side of the egg hitting the side of the table... repeatedly :p

Except that I almost never eat boiled eggs.

I too am not a boiled egg eater. If I was, I imagine that I'd be a little-endian though.

Oh man, eggs are the food of the gods. There are nearly as many ways to eat them as potatoes.

I tend to smack 'em against my forehead and use the cracks to peel... I'm an all-over-endian.

I usually use my knuckles or an other egg and then my knuckles to break the one which shell isn't cracked. Then I peel them completely.

Squeezing them doesn't work, broke one boiled egg this way and smashed it completely, then it was nice to try to pick all the bits of shell from the gunk.

Don't hit the eggs too hard, you'll end up mashing them.

But with an egg cup, I think I might be a big-endian.

I haven't had a boiled egg in a long time, but when I did eat them, I'd crush the egg in my hand until the shell was broken in to tiny bits, and then I'd peel it under running water.

So what does that make me? :rolling:

You don't have to peel them. They are just chock full of vitamans(as bear grylls said right before eating a raw birds egg, shell & all) yeah i know vitamins is spelled wrong above but that is how it sounds when he says it:D

As some have already said, I too, hit the side of the egg against the table and peel it from there. I could not imagine to break it from the big or little end, that is just... weird.

Side too. :p I smash the shell into pieces gently by knocking it on the table or something, or with my fingers, and then remove it with my fingers. :p

Oh, I actually just hold it in my hand, knock it against my forehead so it breaks and peel it all off. However, if I'd had to make the choice, I'd say little-endian.

What happens if you break it on the side, and not at either end?

Little-endian. Clearly, big-endians are upstart heretical rebels that deserve to be crushed.

I'm with KC, I cut off the top at the little end, then dip toast into it and eat the yoke, then I scoop out the white and eat lightly salted.

For raw or hard-boiled eggs, I crack the middle of the long side against the nearest flat surface and proceed with shell removal as appropriate. Soft-boiled eggs don't touch my plate - it's purely an issue of texture.

I eat a hard boiled egg about once a year - at Easter. I completely agree with Rally on soft boiled eggs. So for the infrequency with which I eat them, I would classify myself as a little endian.
