Some guy wants the world to start using a new calendar he invented that has 30 days in January, February, April, May, July, August, October, and November, and 31 days in March, June, September, and December. Then you would add an extra week every five or six years at the end of December to catch up on the lag instead of doing leap years. Apparently this system would work out perfectly and would make it so that every day of every year was always on the same day of the week. Plus it would be better for scheduling and computing interest, supposedly. The only drawback is that it would not really be accurate in the literal sense - by the time you got to the extra week every fifth year you'd be off celestially by quite a bit. (I guess it's that way now too, only by less.)

Would you like to switch to this calendar?

Personally I'm not one to quibble too much with details, but in some vague way it would trouble me that we could be off by as much as a week at some times. The guy's answer to this is apparently "who cares?" Likewise with people who would be f*cked over always having their birthday on a Monday, etc. He says you should just celebrate your birthday on Saturday, but that sounds a little too pat because Saturday is not your birthday, Monday is. I think he's coming from the all-opposition-must-be-destroyed point of view in defense of his sacred calendar rather than thinking about it pragmatically, but meh.

Also maybe it could be called the Hankey-Pankey calendar (as opposed to Hanke-Henry), which would be cool.

Heh. That's funny. "Who cares if your birthday always falls on Monday." Well, who cares if every date falls on the same day then?

I like the yearly lottery that is the current calendar system... you never know what you're going to get, so it's like a never-ending game in a way. Fun. A sterile, always-identical calendar sounds deathly boring to me.

Wait... when did we switch to a calendar where the days of the week are randomly assigned numerical dates of the month?

    :p

Every year? Heh, not randomly, of course, but unless you keep the previous calendar in your head and see the next one as just a continuation, every year is a bit different in terms of which days various holidays fall on and so on.

X-mas on Saturday and Sunday. New years day on Sunday.

Choose your own holiday and place it on a convenient Saturday or Sunday.

    I will keep this one.

That reminds me of an old joke....

A guy went into the store to buy condoms but was overwhelmed by the selection. He asked the pharmacist what he should get and the pharmacist replied, "Well, the high school kids buy singles in hopes they will get lucky. The single adults buy the three pack -- two for Friday night and one for Saturday morning. The married guys buy the twelve pack."

    "Twelve pack?"

    "Yeah, January, February, March, ...."

I wouldn't mind another month in the year....

A leap day every four years is easy enough to remember. But a full leap week every five or six years according to rules which nobody understands? No thanks.

If we want each day to fall on the same weekday every year, the Shire calendar makes more sense.

Henry would not be pleased with your opposition, Montresor. He's probably coming for you now. ;)
