Its 2012 and tensions have once again been rising in the Middle East. With a series of natural disasters wreaking havoc across the area, several extremist groups in Pakistan, one of the countries affected, had begun to gain major support. All this culminated in a Military coup leaving General Khan in charge, he promptly issued an order to mobalise his military forces for an invasion of India, hoping to gain more land to replace that damaged by the recent disasters.

On June 16th they crossed the border, and two weeks later NATO had decided to get involved by the request of the India. Forces were transported and a beach head established in the city of Mandvi on July 7th.

    This is the current situation:

The Pakistan army is a well trained and formidible opponent, but they are not the only enemies we are facing, they have a number of terrorist organisations operating in the area aswell, though they deny all association with them. They lay roadside bombs, abushes, throw explosives over the walls of our bases. Needless to say they are a major thorn in our side and are seriously slowing down our progress.

Thats why we assembled your team, you were nominated by your respective commanders as exceptional soldiers, your job is to take the fight to the enemy. From now on your callsign is Sigma and your orders come straight from the top. Your first mission briefing will be at 0900 hours tomorrow.

    Dismissed.

    -------------------------------------------------------------

Hey guys, I am looking for 4 players (at the moment) to take on the role of Sigma squad. You are a selection of elite soldiers, one person will be the squad leader, though this doesn't make him/her too different from the others they will need to be a little more active between missions.

Post if your interested, and get some characters up, try and get them to fit the roles of:

Squad Leader - leadership is important, advanced medical training.
Designated Marksman - Not an actual sniper, but someone who can lay down accurate fire when needed.
Support Weapon Specialist - Light Machine Guns, Mortars, Rocket Launchers etc.
Demolitions Specialist - Mines, bombs (both activating and deactivating), destroying things.

Remember your a multinational squad so any NATO country is a possible nationality, your well trained and are a spec ops team. If you have any questions post them here or PM me :)

Is this freeform, and what exactly do the colors represent? I am guessing blue is NATO, red Pakistan... Is India green?

Certainly interested. Although I second The Shaman's first question - freeform, or you got a set of rules in mind?

Thats a very good question and one I certainly should have answered in the OP

I would not be completely adverse to free form if thats what everyone wants out of the game. However I would like to throw in some rules just to avoid it ending up with everyone being super human and escaping unscathed from every mission (I find people are sometimes reluctant to get hurt in freeform).

So if I were to impose rules they would be something like:

D6 system to keep things simple.
3+ to snap shot someone at mid range 100 - 400 meters
6+ for terrorists to snap shot someone at mid range 100 - 400 meters
5+ for Pakistan's troops to snap shot someone at mid range 100 - 400 meters

Modifiers (+ means harder and - means easier):

    Cover +1
    Enemy Prone +1
    Moving +1

    Aiming -1 (they stack)
    You Prone -1

They would just be guides, open to changes as you write and you can stack any of them, so you could get +2 from cover if it was heavy. I don't want to curb your creative streaks but I do want to add some risks to your gameplay, I'm not out to kill players just make you keep your heads down and avoid too many rambo moments :p To put it simply I'd like you to roll some dice just to give you the chance of missing :)

If you shoot someone we'll assume they are dead or incapacitated unless you say otherwise. Or I say otherwise :p

    A few weapon notes:
NATO uses 5.56mm standard ammo for basic weapons and LMG's fire 7.62mm, you can equip your man with any gun under the sun, but if you want easy resupply you should go with something that fires these, I'll be as accomadating as possible though. Try looking at the standard equipment various countries armies, some examples/ideas:
    M16 - America
    SA80 - Britain
    Famas - France
    G36 - Germany
Alot of weapons have various versions that fire different calibers so if you have your heart set on something (ie your a bit of a gun nut lol) then do some searching :)
    (Wikipedia is your friend :D)

And in answer to your other question Shaman, NATO is Blue, Pakistan is Red, and the gap in between is held by Indian forces for the time being. The Pakistan advance is being slowed by logistical problems, that is after all a BIG front line :)

Hope this helps and atleast makes a small semblance of sense.

In things like this, I certainly think rules are needed. I'd even have a bit more than that, but it's your call.

One futher question - you will be GMing, correct?

I'll throw my name down for the explosives expert.

    Rules

Ok so I'm back now and have taken the time to write up some rules for the RP. These are still subject to changes, so feel free to make suggestions and criticisms as all help is welcome :) To those who I sent this as a PM to, a few things have changed so read over it again!

    Code:
    Goals
    -Shooting Rules
    -Modifiers
    -Post/Turn Structure
    -KEEP THINGS MOVING!
    -Accessable

    ----------------------------------------------------------

    Chances to hit basic:

    Terrorist	6+
    Soldier 5+
    Player 4+

    ----------------------------------------------------------

    Modifiers:

Sacrifice your ability to move fast/far to Aim	+1
Going Prone to steady your firing +1
Shooting at a target more than 300m away	-1
Shooting at a Running target -1
    Firing on Full Auto -1

    ----------------------------------------------------------

If a Player successfully hits an enemy the target is taken out of action
(for combat purposes dead, for story purposes [if necissary] wounded).

If an Enemy successfully hits a Player a second D6 is rolled and only on a
roll of 1 is the character wounded in a serious manner. Any other roll
indicates the player is forced into cover, lightly wounded, knocked down
or something suitably dangerous but non lethal.

Equipment can affect rolls, for instance a scope will increase the distance at
which some can engage their opponent. A Bipod will increase weapon stability
    when deployed.

Suppressive fire is for all intents and purposes the action of firing your
weapon on full auto, your aim is not to kill people but to make
them stay down allowing your side more maneuverability for a time.

Enemies and Players are safe while behind cover, and may continue to perform
actions normally as long as they do not present a target of themselves.
If for any reason someone leaves cover or makes themselves a
target they automatically incur the possibility of damage. On the
roll of a 1 on a D6 they are hit and wounded as they attempt to perform
    their action.

If it is a suitably significant amount of time that the character is in the
open under suppressive fire they must roll for the chance of damage
more than once. There is no limit to the amount of rolls that may be
taken if a character insists on standing their ground.

    ----------------------------------------------------------

A turn will cosist of several actions, some examples are:

Move slowly - keep weapons ready to shoot.
Move quickly - lower weapon briefly to move faster cannot shoot this turn.
    Shoot - fire weapon.
Aim - take a few moments to aim, cannot move.
Change stance - Stand, crouch, prone can only change once per turn.
Cover - watch an area ready to engage anything that appears.

    ----------------------------------------------------------

A wounded player is not necissarily dead, he downed and wounded, the player
can continue to post and engage enemies but they are limited to a very slow
crawl and will need to roll 7+ (a 6 followed by a 4+) to hit anything
and cannot take any aim actions.

Team mates may drag or carry the wounded player but are limited to using
    side arms (Pistols).

Any one may attempt to stabalise the wounded player but will need to roll 5+
the squad leader has advanced medical training and can stabalise the
    player automatically.

The squad leader can stabalise anyone but himself automatically though he can
grant a +1 bonus to anyone trying to heal him by giving instructions.

A stabalised player is only just combat effective, their basic chance to hit
is increased to 5+ and their movement is limited.
Thats the basic rules I think, might have got a bit carried away but I kept it as simple as I could manage, ANY criticism is welcome no matter how harsh! I had a few thoughts to other mechanics, such as something I call "good faith gaming".

    GOOD FAITH GAMING

This is an attempt to let the me the GM set up surprises for players without having to give the game away completely. Since its hard for a GM to suddenly spring an ambush mid turn in a PBP this is a possible solution, the closest comparison to anything I can think of is that it is similar to those adventure books you get, where you choose an action and turn to the relvant page, though a bit more free form. It makes use of the PM system and spoiler tags.

The following is an example PM you might recieve under this system:

"Hey you're walking down a main street on your foot patrol

    If you head towards 1
As you get halfway down the alley the shutters of some of the houses burst open and gun men open up on you, you get lucky and they miss as you stumble into cover behind some bins.

If you end up at 2
    Nothing special happens.

    If you head to 3
You walk down the street a little way, you begin to notice that the locals are moving hastily out of the area.

If you go back to 4
As you round the corner you spot a man armed with an AK-47 trying to kick down the door of one of the houses, he hasn't noticed you yet, he's too busy shouting abuse at the occupents of the house.

Remember you can always do something unexpected, and might not go near any of these, so be creative and have fun :)

    GM."

The idea is that you only read the spoiler that applies to your choice of action, obviously you might not wander into any of the things and thats fine but this allows me to put set pieces into the game (some might be decoys though, wouldn't want you to know where all the interesting things are ;)) and perform other GM duties through your posts. Every player will get these, and dependant on where they are, or whats going on they might be the same or different.

The term "Good faith gaming" refers to the fact I am trusting you to not just read all the options and pick the one you like best :) Again ANY criticism is welcome!

If you have any other ideas feel free to shoot me a PM or post it in the thread, a successful RP takes work from both GM and players alike and I'm happy to listen :) thanks for your time!

Also people can start posting character ideas:

    -Description of looks
-Equipment (not a huge list just main armaments)
-Previous service (what part of your countries army are you from? Have you served in previous theatres?)
    -Background

When it comes to background stuff, a small service record, some interesting points about your character etc. Background doesn't need to be huge unless you want it to be. All wars to date have happened, what went on between 2009 and 2012 is up for discussion so be creative but keep it realistic, WW3 definately has NOT happened :) Soldiers come in all shapes, sizes and personalities but they are all capable in a team so try and avoid loners ;) not telling you how to make your character just want to avoid awkward situations!

That looks fine Tarrasque, I'm assuming he's British ;) and taking that radio means I am assuming you'll be the squad comms guy with a direct line to HQ and such?

    A few notes to all:

This RP has rules to guide your posts and to keep life interesting, I haven't specified the number of actions per post because I trust you to use your common sense and be sinsible about it. I am not limiting you on how you go about your missions either, if you want to get together as a group and make a plan (even if it involves splitting up) thats fine, or if you just want to be inserted into the location and play it by ear thats cool too. I will be using maps, though they are a rough guide more than absolute truth since I'll be depicting your places on them by reading your posts, if you feel adventurous or want to make sure I get it right then use MS Paint or something to draw on my previous map and PM a link for it to me, I'll tidy it up and stuff :) (note: this would be helpful if you go in buildings, unless its obvious, so I know which ones).

My aim overall is to strike a balance between Freeform RP and Rules, I've given you all the info you need to have the enemy shoot at you, your allies (NPC soldiers) shoot at enemies, dealing with wounds, etc so use it. Likewise if you come across a situation which your not sure about let me know and I'll get back to you (I check these boards almost every day, also Chewbaka in the chatroom, and my MSN and Skype are on my profile). If I take too long just have a guess and we'll sort it later.

Also PM me if you have any ideas/criticisms for ANYTHING in the RP! This is important because I want this to be fun :D

Well you did say special forces not just average forces so that pretty much limits us to British :p. I believe (although I might be incorrect) that the Bowman is used for intra squad comms as well as for long distance so that's why he's carrying one. I'm sure he wouldn't mind doing comms duty though.

Just being picky, but did you mean the L85A2 or the LSW which is the L86A2? The L85 is the standard assault rifle, whilst the L86 LSW has a longer barrel and is used by the designated marksman due to its increased accuracy.

I did mean the 85. I imagine with the extra accuracy comes extra wieght, and as we already have our very own marksman, the 85 works fine.

Thats looks good Rotku, the picture made me chuckle but its a good way to avoid describing lol :) So that makes 2 british, I think we may have a third on the way :D (not that I'm complaining, certainly makes supply drops a lot easier lol).

Heh, guess that's what happens when one person is from the UK, and another from one of her old colonies ;)

No, only reason I went british was modeling it after that character from the movie (and before anyone says anything, yes, I know there's also a book - but the characters are different, even if names remain the same).

Well being british myself I am MORE than happy to accomodate all this love for the british forces :D

Missed this when I posted earlier, sorry. I think you took me little too literally when I said Spec Ops...I meant the team would be taking the role of spec ops, not that they were all of spec ops background lol...I don't even know if that makes sense to anyone but me :D well whatever its no problem at all ;)

As to the Bowman, from what I can tell its for everything, while every trooper carries a radio for intersquad stuff the bowman is for that plus long range comms (ie. calling artillery, guiding air support to targets, getting in touch with HQ and stuff). I don't know alot about military specifics (should I admit that? :p) but I know enough to get by I hope :D

PS. Don't worry I will research the proverbials out of stuff to make sure I get it right for you guys ;)

You can find everything you want to know on Wikipedia (and Google at a stretch). Just search for a nations army or something, they usually have a section on Equipment :)
