No, people are responsible for their own actions.

Besides, how would a psychiatrist in this field study this subject if he can't access these resources?

Very true. However, I doubt that it'd be used for such research and, if it was, why go through Amazon publighing? There are plenty of psychiatrc journals that would probably publish this specifically for that purpose. Going via Amazon is deliberately putting the work in the public domain.
It may just be me but I really think that it's dangerous

Agreed, and I'm surprised Amazon ever agreed to publish it.

I heard last night that the page was no longer available. So Amazon may have gotten a lot of adverse email and is rethinking providing the book.

I doubt that the book will turn someone into a child abuser who does not have tendencies that way already.

No but someone who already has those tendancies would have easy access to the material

I'm all for free speech and all that stuff, but every right has some limits. IMHO, the author has crossed the line with this piece of <snip> and he should be summarily executed. I've worked with kids who've been sexually abused. They are never the same. Ever. The perps need to be punished as brutally as possible.

Would someone really go and look on Amazon for a book on "how to abuse children"? Surely such actions are not a thought out process that people research into. Would be interesting if they'd take a similar stance regarding books on how to make home-made bombs and the likes.

There are plenty of books out there which seem to promote or assist in criminal behaviour this is nothin new, its only hitting a sore spot because of societies views on child abuse. I doubt that this book would make anyone commit an act they wouldnt be considering anyway likewise I dont think anyone who would would look to a manual for help. Its just another sick book added to a world of sick books, films and other media.

That's actually a very good point. Nevertheless, there has to a line somewhere. I believe that Amazon handled this poorly. I know that they have thousands of items and they can't be aware of every detail, on every item. As a regular Amazon customer, and I order in the thousands of US dollars worth of items from them every year, for the last 14 years, I am pretty pissed that they ignored the protest. When customers get pissed, or feel they have been treated unfairly, they vote with their dollars. The family is getting me a nice new guitar for Christmas and I was going to order it from Amazon because it can be a little tricky buying an instrument "sight-unseen."

    http://www.amazon.com/Gibson-ES-335...cal-instruments&ie=UTF8&qid=1289748634&sr=1-5

But they have always taken care of me with any issues. Still I'm having second thoughts because of this issue, I may order somewhere else.

Sorry, that's just wrong. I was close to someone who was a victim, and whenever she heard that she would say, "thanks for making me a victim all over again." I used to say the same thing as you, LKD, but listening to her story and how she managed to be as normal as the next person, I have to agree with her. It's wrong to tell these people over and over again that they are permanently broken. It's just plain wrong.

I'm not saying that every time I see them I say "hey, How are you, Kim, how are you dealing with that abuse from your childhood?" I am not a moron. But it's been my experience that their affect is permanently altered -- and any one who has spoken to me about it under more appropriate circumstances has said to me that the pain is always there.

But you're right in that it isn't cool to go digging for it. I don't. But my observations tell me that there is a lifelong effect on the person. I don't think being observant and sensitive is a bad thing.

That has not been my experiece; that is with adults, not kids. Typically adluts know how to move on at some point. Although you are right, some can't, or don't know how. But my experience is still fairly limited.

I didn't say that either. What I'm saying is that it sounds like if you meet someone who is a victim, you assume that person is in pain, or can't live a perfectly normal life. I don't believe that. And if you treat people in that manner, it just makes it more difficult for them to move on, at least that's how I see it.

I understand that point, and I am confident in my treatment of people that I don't act in such a way as to make them self-conscious or weird.

My apologies, LKD. I used the second person just to make a "general" observation. I should have used 3rd person so that you would not think I was describing your treatment of them. :)

This is closer to what I meant to say:

Hmmm... I wonder if the problem is the terribly chosen title for the book. The title certainly gives the impression that it is a "how to" type manual. However, according to the article:

That makes it a little better. Although one wonders how you can make an entire book out of it. It would seem like you'd have "Chapter 1: Don't Screw Kids", and I don't know what else you'd need.

Tips and techniques for controlling deviant thoughts and urges are not a problem. From some of the guy's later comments, though, it appears that he is not at all ashamed of his desires. And he damn well should be.

And would be recorded buying it if they bought it through Amazon in a nice, tidy database.

I heard of a guy in America who was trying all sorts of therapy and help to try and get rid of his deviancy, he never did anything wrong, but he knew what he was thinking/feeling was wrong and sought help. He got absolutely slated for it, ended up shamed, humiliated and hated for trying what he could to ensure he didn't do anything wrong.

If it was designed as a help book for people then it wouldn't be the first time a shocking title was used as cheap publicity.
