There is a stupid panel in Acrobat Reader for their paid service to convert files to Word or excel that opens every time I open a PDF file.
It used to be that I could close the panel and it would stay closed, but now it pops open for every file.

Any idea how to get rid of it for good? It just annoys me by taking up screen space that could be used to display useful content.

Simple: Go to the Edit menu, select Preferences. Select Documents under the Categories, then under the Open Settings select the "Remember the current state of Tools Pane" checkbox. After that it will remember the state you left the tool pane in when you open documents.

It is checked, and it still opens the stupid thing every time.

Did you close them up? Checking the box just makes it remember where you left them the last time you had it open. If you did... well it works for me... *shrug*

Yes, I did. It seems to be working on the Windows 7 computer, but not on the Windows 10 computer.

My computer is Windows 10... so the problem is not specific to that.

I wouldn't use it on those either.

The version on XP is outdated, but I've been using that computer for almost 20 years (it's a Win98SE/XP dual-boot).
What would you use on Windows 7 or XP instead of Acrobat for reading PDFs?
The last version I installed is too slow, but I don't have any installers for Acrobat 9 that I can find, and Acrobat 6 or 7 is too old.

Ok, I had to do a clean reinstall of Windows 10 at the start of April.
For the heck of it I tried the procedure, and NOW it works on the Windows 10 computer.
Same hardware save it now has a D Drive (I decided to add a hard drive when purchasing a backup drive), but the software has been reinstalled from scratch.

The checking the box did NOT work before, now it does.
