[IMG] Kay, I've have this bloody game for about 4 years now and haven't beaten it once! I've got the happy little strategy guide (though it's been lost for a while now...might wanna look under my dad's desk) and got meself pretty far...right up to the part in Chapter 5 (I think, it's been a while) when you get arrested...for whatever that reason is...and the book told me to talk to the gnome dude who would teleport me outside or something...but as soon as I get outside the guards swoop down upon me and start attacking--which of course the book mentions nothing about--and the only way to get out is to kill them, which drops my reputation about a zillion points, and so every guard I come across after that attacks, and naturally my party members start getting mutinous, all that fun stuff. Is there something I'm doing wrong?

Of course, after numerous computer crashes I've lost that file (that's partially why I've forgotten a lot of it)...but any help I can get here I'll write down and use for when that time comes. Thanks in advance!

I know your problem. I killed one FM(hmm... I remember their battlecry: "I AM the law!") and the reputation went down 9 points. Then about ten others started chasing me but... long live Xan and his Haste spell. ;) :D I avoided them without killing any other FM soldier.

Each time they spot you, charm them using one of those special cloaks.

Right, just run from them. There is no reason to stand and fight them if you don't wish. The poor AI won't allow them to follow you into buildings or across map border zones. Have everybody dive into a house and then have your stealthy scout, survey the areas for the best and fastest route past the guards to your destination. Another method is to use one character with the boots of speed to lead all the guards around while everyone else heads to where you want to go.

[IMG] Woohoo, got lotsa pointers...I'll save 'em all and look them up when I get into that sticky spot again. The strategy guide is a little confusing, if any of you have it (Brady Games, by William Keith Jr. and Nina Barton), it's in the form of a journal. So it don't cover everything. Bah. But thanks a lot guys, you were prolly a lot more helpful than the stupid book! :D

By the by, I think if you have Shar-Teel in your party, you may find it somewhat easier to deal with the incarceration event. Turns out she is related to...well just try it for yourself. :)

I find the 'official' strategy guides to be next to worthless. They're not even updated for the patches. Try Dan Simpson's BG FAQ at http://www.sorcerers.net/Games/BG/index.php Much more thorough. BTW, make sure you have all the latest patches, or the game in some instances cannot be completed (yes it happened to me  ).
