I was brought up believing that monosodium glutamate is bad for you and I often check the labels of thing to see if it's an ingredient. Lately I've had a few people tell me that it's not actually bad for you. What say you, wise and discerning people of SP?

According to the experts over the years, everything has been labeled bad for you, then they realize it isn't as bad as they used to claim.

There was a time when fats were public enemy #1, you should eat carbs and protein instead and everybody's going on the fat free diet.

I've never had a problem with it. This guy covers a lot of the relevant information and science.

Yes I've come across a lot of information saying it's fine. I was just curious if some people were brought up believing it was bad for you. I know that was a common belief when I was a kid. Also,I bought a bottle of msg for the spice collection the other day and I was still feeling a little weird about buying a bottle of something I'd actively tried to avoid for a lot of my life.

Within reasonable amounts it's no worse health-wise than salt.

The whole discussion about it has always involved racism and fear of the "unnatural".

You might not like the taste or the texture, and it is used a lot to cover up using low quality meat, but it is not especially dangerous.

The secret tech with it is to buy a salt with MSG in it - or a seaweed salt - and then add it just before cooking is done.

Thanks for the cooking tips Taza. I don't imagine I'll use it much but it is nice to have on hand for special occasions.

Chinese salt? I’ve used in my Chinese cooking over the years with no issues. Of course it’s all about being reasonable. Then again there’s plenty of other ingredients/foods that contain umami.
