I just picked up X-com: Enemy Unknown at the library "book sale" for about $3 total.
There was a box ($2) and a DVD case ($1), the box is labeled "Special Edition" and the DVD case is labeled "Complete Edition". I thought the DVD case might have been removed from the box by somebody as there was another DVD case within, so I bought both as it was only $1 more, but apparently they are two copies of the game as they both have 3 discs within.

Which one should I install on my Windows 10 computer? Both appear to be steam versions.

The readme says that my ATI Radion 3450 is not good enough to play it on my older Windows 7 computer, and I've seen something about Windows 10 issues.

I liked the "Collector's Edition" of the original X-com that I found at the same quarterly sale about a decade ago, so I thought I'd try the remake.

I haven't had any issues with the gog version I have on Windows10.

I'd assume the complete edition includes the various DLC, of which the Enemy Within is probably the most significant. Though the Second wave DLC also adds some pretty significant options, but I think those options were also included in Enemy Within. Don't know about the special edition.

I only played the Enemy Within, though, it adds some stuff and there is basically no reason not to play with it.

Aside from that, the remake is fine. I enjoyed it. The combat is not quite as good as I'd like, more like battle chess than JA2 (or the original X-Com, for that matter). The base management is insanely convoluted, if you ask me, not that the building options and stuff is so complicated, but there are so many different resources that you need for different things. It makes planning when to build what complicated, and about as useful as rolling dice, in the hopes that you've managed to gather enough of 3 or 4 different resource types that a specific building or item requires.

You want to play regular Enemy Unknown if you don't want to have to rush into the map like capture the flag to collect the Meld before it self destructs.

But Enemy Within is so much more fun with the Meld-enabled genetic splicing as well as the whole addition of the EXALT as a new set of enemies and missions.

Yeah, I suppose you have to hurry to get the meld. At least some of the maps. Others it doesn't really matter that much. The jumpy legs genemods are great for allowing greater mobility, but I especially like the mechs that are added in Enemy Within. Nothing quite like punching an alien (or EXALT) through a wall.

The best genemod is the Mimetic Skin. Fantastic. Funny thing is I've never tried the mech mods; I like the genemods too much :)

It probably is the best genemod, yes. Expensive also. Gamebreaking almost, when your whole team can just move right up to an enemy pod, and then blast it from point blank range. It gives a lot of opportunity to chose how to do your engagements.

MECs are great, though, you really should try them. They have a lot of options for dealing with stuff, and more options is always good. For instance, if there's a muton elite in high cover, they're usually pretty hard to dig out, but a mech can either destroy that cover with it's main weapon, with a grenade launcher (that has a bigger range, bigger blast radius, and more damage than normal grenades), or you can just run up and punch those 18 HP straight off of him. Or if your mech is equiped with a flamethrower, you can set him and any buddies nearby on fire, causing them to panic and lose the next turn.

So, any other tips that somebody who has played X-com:UFO Defense and Terror From the Deep should know before starting the remake? Any must-have 3rd party patches like Baldurdash/G3Fixpack or Ease-of-use/G3Tweaks for Baldur's Gate that I should install before ever trying the game?

Nah, you don't need any 3rd party patches or anything. I'm not sure that anything that you may remember from playing the original X-com games really applies here, it's pretty much a completely different game, just the name is the same (and some of the enemies, I suppose).

The best round I had in Enemy Within was during the EXALT compound assault. I had an Assault Close Combat Specialist with an Alloy Cannon and Mimetic Skin posted up in the upper right corner of the mansion next to a window to the outside. Unbeknownst to me there were at least 6 EXALT and maybe as many as 8 on the outside of that window within striking range. On the EXALT turn every one of those EXALT ran past that window one after the other to be one-shotted by the Close Combat Specialist! I was afraid I was going to run out of ammo before they were done! :)
