BG thinks it needs to be installed for limited user

    I haven't played the original Baldur's Gate in a couple years, but i just tried to launch it. Choosing the game from the Start Menu in Windows XP brings up the launcher with a prompt to install it instead of play the game.
    This does not happen if I run it from the administrator account.
    It also does not happen if I reboot the computer into Windows 98SE as the computer is a Windows 98SE/XP dual-boot computer and i installed the game to the same directory on the Windows 98SE hard drive's "Program Files" so there is only one copy of the game (cutting the HD space used in half) on the two hard drives (actually Windows 98SE has one partition, XP has another, and the E Drive has all the data).

    I recall this being an issue with Baldur's Gate II, but not the first BG.

    I've checked, and the registry appears to have the same permissions for both BG2 and BG1, although there are a lot fewer registry entries for BG1.
    Security permissions on Program Files should not be an issue because it is installed to a FAT32 partition.

    Any idea what else could screw it up so the game thinks it needs to be installed for limited users?
    I've only checked that one part of HKLM.
    The permissions for
    HKLM/SOFTWARE/Microsoft/Currentversion/Windows/App Paths/BGMain.exe
    are identical to the permissions for
    HKLM/SOFTWARE/Microsoft/Currentversion/Windows/App Paths/BG2Main.exe

    Any other suggestions? I know this problem was solved years ago, if it was ever an issue.
    Last resort I could try making a copy of the override folder and then reinstalling BG1, ToTSC, and the patches, then overwriting the override folder, but I don't want to invest that much time if there is a quick fix.

    Any other suggestions on what to look at?

    I think I found it. There's an icon/shortcut on the desktop linking to BGmain.exe, while the shortcut in the Start Menu points to baldur.exe.
    Opening BGMain.exe bypasses the launcher and launches the game.
    That MIGHT have been what I did, I just can't believe I did not add it to the games folder in my START menu with all the other games a decade ago.
