After many years, I have finally gotten around to playing this game. I'm familiar with CRPG games. My question is how forgiving is this game. I'm playing a plain simple fighter. I see there are a lot of options when you level up. Are there things that I have to do or can I do pretty much anything and still be successful. I'm playing on normal mode.

My initial playthrough was many iterations ago, so I do not really know how it stands up right now. I found it to basically be reasonably forgiving unless you went out of your way to try to do something silly on leveling up. Definitely should be easier for a combat build as your first one, rather than magic. You get a stable of NPCs through the game, so you can try out most of the classes by managing them.

If you end up unhappy with how you levelled up, the inns provide an option to redo your level-ups. Keep in mind, the more levels of experience you've acquired, the more money it costs to retrain your character.

Then again, if you sell off every scrap of loot you pick up from your enemies, you never really lack for cash.

It’s an easy game on normal difficulty. Fighters can tank or DPS. Probably the best choice for a new player. Once you understand the mechanics and all of the various build/item combos you’ll probably play thru it a few times just to see what the other classes can do.

There are some great dialogs with the in-game NPCs. Durance, Eder and Hirivais have some real eye-opening commentary.

The first part of the game can be the hardest. Once you hit level 6 or so the builds start to shine.
