Hey guys, I'm planning to run a new iwd 2 tactics playthrough. Any recommendation on party forms? I'm thinking about a meleer as MC, mainly Paladins.

I don't like to go 1 Pal/29 Caster build. But the 4 fighter/26 pal is too traditional. Are there other good builds that can max my dps and also provide good defense?

I'm thinking about drow 27 Pal/2 Wiz/1 Monk but it will result in heavy exp penalty, but I don't wanna go asmair either.

Last question, what other team member do u think will suit the tactics mod? Thanks for any input!

Just curious but why the 2 wizard levels in the 27 Pal/2 Wiz/ 1 Monk?

Because I wanna use the shield spell to boost my AC, but I think lvl 1 wizard's shield duration is too short. So I have 2 wizard level. Also considering make it 3 wizard lvl so i can use mirror image. But not sure if it's worthy.

I'm thinking about another bard character for the song and CC, a pure caster, another offtank/dps. Anyone have insight on these builds?

If you go for 3 wizard level, you'd have to take two monk levels to avoid the XP penalty. That might not be so bad, as you get the deflect arrow feat for free. Since you can't wear heavy armor and still use the wizard spells, the deflect arrow feat is probably helpful.
Although honestly, I think a monk/wizard might be better than mixing in monk with paladin.

Another thing to consider is the mage armor spell, which has a much longer duration. Not quite as good as shield, but good enough.

I'd like a high level Paladin for damage output because he has holy power and champain's strength later. So I'm thinking about 25 Paladin/3 Wizard/2 Monk build, Monk level can help him get the wis AC bonus while wizard level can grant mirror image. But the problem is he is very stats starving. Now I'm building him like 18/18/6/13/20/5 but the Con is too low now. So I might give up Wizard level and make him 26 Paladin/2 Fighter/2 Monk with 18/18/16/3/20/5.

Also Half-orc is cool but it has barbarian as favorite class so I cannot find a way to avoid exp penalty...

A Bard is seriously irreplaceable. Get a Human Bard, invest on 3 dialog skills and UMD, then you have a diplomat that can still do something in battle (singing). IF you ever divest to someone else doing the dialog, they would become a little more useless. I tried doing without Bard once and man, our diplomats suffered terribly.

I see that you have paladin covered (for Cera Summat, large sword)

You will need another melee for one of axe/polearm. Axe has more items, but polearm can afford a longer reach, which in battle can be seriously convenient. You just dont have to maneuver that one in to a closely placed spot but can just swing at any within the 3 tile reach. I got my HalfOrc cover that with a combi of Dreadmistress/Fighter.

You need a human wizard if you dont want to squat. If you squat, Tiefling is fine for higher INT. Higher ECL would be too punishing. And generic wizard is much better than specialist despite the increase spell slot. Spell scrolls are hard enough to come by without the irritation of finding out we can not learn it.

YOu especially need a human cleric for best kind of casting. Human is even better than +WIS races.

You will need a scouting personel. I propose Deep Gnome Rogue/Fighter4, focus on bow for a sniper scout build, and that work well despite the highest ECL.

A Rogue can substitute for a Bard, but generally you use CHA as a dump stat for rogues so they are less effective. A rogue with high CHA can be just as good as a bard as a diplomat.

As for the deep gnome scout, using a monk can be just as effective. Monks can hide in the shadows, and if you multiclass to illusionist you can add spells like mage armor, shield, and invisibility for just 3 levels of illusionist. Combine with their natural armor and you have a decoy as well as a scout.

If you use Rogue for Diplomat you will be sore and irritated the whole way. I know this shit build, because I just very recently use that in my non-Bard party, as in two months ago. Diplomat is hugely wasteful to a character, so if you use Rogue, you will waste both role: dip and scout. in the end I gave up and return to Bard. Using Bard as Rogue, that mean the Charisma stat get used to the fullest. PLus, Bard can just sing and do some spells, so the waste is very very limited.

Monk is... well... something of a niche thing. If you like monks you will find opportunity to use monks. So I think your idea might be possible. But if you dont like monk, dont bother.

For the effectiveness of Deep Gnome Rogue, my build of R4/F4 is effective up to and maybe beyond the Underdark. The nondetection innate bonus of DG add to the Stealth score and he can roam at will. The low HP is non-issue because he can shoot to death anyone in his range with his mastery of a bow.
