I can't choose between the two because I started with 1 after about a year when it came out and then 2 came out shortly after I finished it. So I think you should have a 50/50 pick also ;)

I picked one since that is the one I have enough experience with to make a judgement

Baldur's Gate 2, definitely. Romance and banter alone is enough for me to make it a clear winner. Add on top of that the plethora of high-quality mods you can use to enhance your gaming experience further (I don't count ToB, though, that one is by far the worst of the bunch).

I picked BG2, because I like high levels. BG1 is fine, too, but it is more of a stepping stone to BG2 for me.

BG1 because of all the open areas and exploration. I don't enjoy jam-packed city maps where you stumble upon one quest after another on every corner and there was just way too much of that in BG2 for my liking.

Yeah, aimlessly wandering is the most fun part of BG

Aimlessly wandering I only do once, then I only go where I know there is either good loot or good xp and all the other areas are just forgotten.

The first game I played between BG and BG2 (originals, years ago) was BG2 and I'm totally in love with BG2!

I will need to think about this. I really enjoyed the wandering in BG1 but banter was SO good. Also kits, monks, more thief skills, etc made me happy (though I wish for a few changes).
