Wraith, it's MUCH worse than you think (if its the same area I'm thinking of--the Rune portal) After gettin whacked in there for about 20 reloads, I decided maybe I just hadn't gotten enough power/XP yet, so I left to beat up on some slavelords. Anyway, there seams to be FOUR mages in there: the main guy, Shandlar; two that show up right away, Revnak & Shrylessa. The battle messages talk about a Layne(?) who seems to be invisible on the other side of the room. Plus the big-A beholder Vaxall. Trouble with a capita T. I'm glad I'm not the only one with problems in there!

Sorry, I didn't mean to spoil for anyone. Just overjoyed to find someone else in extreme pain. :D

I agree whole hartedly Mobeus, I got stomped numerous times. I left and went and wacked Firkrag (is he easy or what?). Came back and am still getting destroyed. I know I should give up, ... but I MUST HAVE THAT STAFF!!!

Sorry I get a little obsesive around majik Items.

i beat the guys for the staff of the magi in one try (most characters around level 12/13, which i kept them at by not leveling up for most of the game :) as soon as i got control i ran everyone but my paladin back into the stairway area. then my paladin started in on the beholder while edwin, jan viconia, anomen and korgan took out the mage and the assassin. the vampire and the last mage were easy to clean up (undead hunters are so useful cause of the no level drain & no holding)

It was a strugle for me to kill that group of mages. Every buff I could think of with my moond dog and summoned elementals and it still took me about 8 tries to beat them. My stragey was to send one guy ahead of the rest after buffing and summoning into the room.. this summons the whole group of people.. he runs back and we kill the first guy QUICK. I killed him in under 3 seconds, otherwise I would have lost. After him came the beholder and the undead creature and some other person. I left the invisable mage for last. She becomes visable if she starts casting (the staff autmatically casts invisable on her but it gets dispelled when she casts a spell). It took a bit with metor shower and a pit fiend.. but we killed her. Worth all the trouble for the staff? I think so!

Ciller is right. Best to divide and conquer especially if you don't have the firepower early up. Try and lure them to the little foyer room one at a time; if you face them all at once you will get shredded irrespective of what level you are.

Personally I found this battle to be the most difficult in the game, even harder than Kangaxx.
