I found that there are only two good mages in BG1 - Edwin and Xvar, but the problem is that they are evil. When your reputation gets too high Xvar, for example starts getting annoyed, complaining, bla bla bla and at 19 leaves you.

The good ones who will stay by me at a high rep kind of, erm.. suck. I mean - Xan, who is banned from invocation and Dynaheir who is banned from TWO magic schools.

Is there perhaps another mage somewhere in the game that I can add to my team?

...unless I start the game as one...but then I die quickly.

Make one in MP, then put the saves into SP folder. Voila, your very own mage, who doesn't suck, is good and isn't Bhaalspawn. :)

Dynaheir is the only "Good" mage NPC... *sigh*

No summon or charm spells. :(

Get a wand of monster summoning and sell it and buy it back at HighHedge. That should give you 200 charges. Also get the Cloak of Algernon (Charms people) from that guy in the Friendly Arm Inn.

Eze: what exactly do you mean? Should I make the mage the main character or is the idea to replace his .chr file with another member of my team?

Not the PC. Just make a NPC mage in the MP and put the save file into the SP folder. Got it?

Oh, I got it. Ok, I'll try it.
    Thanks for the help

Edit: Erm, I created a mage in MP. Now what am I supposed to do with him? ..put him in some folder or something?

Dual class Imoen to a Conjurer, and she easily holds her own as a mage. In fact, for purposes of BG1, if you handle Imoen correctly, you can make her a two-for-one character.

For purposes of BG1, Disarm Traps is the only thief skill that is indispensable. Knock can open locked chests. Advance her just enough levels to to get Disarm Traps 80, and then make the change. Explore enough outdoor areas and such to get her to Conjurer 5/ Thief 4 and you won't be disappointed.

Beren: sounds good, but I won't be able to cast 4th level spells .. :(
question: can a conjurer learn Identify?

Puredarkness: Xan is the elf guy with the moonblade. He's weak.

Beren, I dual classed Imoen to mage at level 6, because she could still reach mage level 9.

BTW, if I dual-class my thief or fighter in BG1 to a specialist mage, does it stay in BG2?

Yes, Fhirn, conjurers can't cast any divination spells.

To answer a couple of questions,

No, Conjurers don't cast Identify. The reason I go that route is because my protagonist is an elf fighter/mage. If you go with Imoen, you also have to consider how well all of your party members will work together. Conjurer is not the only route, but it is the best one if you can somehow get around the drawback of no divination spells.

No, Imoen won't be the same in BG2. She'll be a Mage 9/Thief 7. While she won't have the benefits that come with magic specialization, she'll be a better thief than I was prepared to make her in BG1.

I've always dualed Imoen to a general mage, and had another mage or multi classed mage in the party. That way I have a good range of spells. I have to agree that the good aligned mages almost never have a look in in my party most of the time I play now. Still, there's nothing wrong with a bit of balance ;) .
If you feel your rep is getting too high, find a house you never ned to go into again and get caught robbing the place. Or in extremem cases, those commoners are a clumsy lot who do fall on swords every so often ;) .

What I think I'll do is create a mage of my own and edit one of the characters from my team (using GateKeeper). I created a Male, Gnome Illusionist (INT 19 :) ) and I'll replace him with Khalid. I just have to change the race, class, Thac0, alignment, save throws, etc. I'll eventually get the exact as I created, only with the lousy name Khalid.

And it's not even cheating - that is, I don't plan on beefing him up to INT 25, or HP 100 or anything. I prefer playing honestly (with minor modifications in places the producers missed out a bit...). Cheating takes the challenge and fun out from the game.

As for Imoen, erm.... I don't know. Might be good. Your guy is a Mage/Figher, so it probably works well for you. My main guy is an Elf Fighter (19 DEX) specializing in Bows. I'll think about it. It'd probably be a good idea if I were to raise the expcap.

I agree, that's kinda taking the fun out of the game. If you truly want to beat it, I suggest sticking to the sucky mages they give you. In fact, BG has no good NPCs, with the possible exception of Kivan. The creating-your-own party members thing is kinda reserved for Icewind Dale.

Oh, yeah, and he's not Xvar, he's Xzar. Why do so many people insist on calling him that? Unless he reminds them of a certain little blue-headed creature...

Sorry, had to correct you. :p

    [IMG] Or, another idea, hehe:

Have Edwin join your team, hack into the files and change him to Good alignment. Nyah nyah.

That way, I'm not creating mages cause that's reserved for IWD. I'm sticking with the mages they gave me. :p
