Well, Yoshimo is a bounty hunter, but you lose him in Spellhold, Jan is a Illusionist/Thief, so if you want to go for the best lockpicker, choose Yoshimo, i have them both now.

I prefere Yoshimo, even if Jan is more useful.

I prefer Yoshimo. I really like his personality, and I wish there was Yoshimo romance. It would add much depth into the story, especially in chapter 4 (hint, hint).

In powergaming sense, Jan is not very powerful in SOA, and all the quests can be done before going to Spellhold, i.e. with Yoshi. The thief is not necessary in the Underdark, and after that, either.

    Yoshimo:
    + Nice character-design
+ Has all the necessary skills
+ Gives you a rather convinient reason to ditch him, later on ;)

    Jan:
    + A load of babble
+ Illusionist, for all that it is worth
+ Itches to your skin like a nasty rash

These facts obviously prove that Yoshimo is a better choise. :p

Jan is great for parties with Minsc, Keldorn, and Anomen -- the four of them combined are a riot!

Jan is more usefull seeing as you max out most thieving skills at relativly low levels. He can save points from stealth and use them on other things which can rise pretty quickly in a few levels, seeing as he get 25 points in stead of Yoshimo's 20. But I really do like Yoshimo as a thief, even more when dualled to a fighter after certain skills reach 100%. :)

I like Yoshimo more. I think Jan is better, due to his multiclassed status and his Jansen AdventureWear (even if it is dry-clean only)

I like using Jan more because of his better thieving ability early in the game. It seems like you need to raise Yoshimo up a level or two (or use potions) to pick even the most trivial of locks.

The only problem with Jan is he is a bit fragile in combat. Stoneskin can let him absorb some hits, but magic hurts a lot.

Jan has some funny banters too.

This is a hard choice for me. I find Jan amusing and pretty useful, but I find Yoshimo just as useful while he's in the party-- I also feel Yoshimo is a well developed character and frankly, I symphathize with him for the whole 'Chapter Four Incident'. In fact I was saddened my first play through when it happened. No Yoshimo, noooo.

I'll say Yoshimo, but it was a hard choice, I love me some Jan Jansen.

Yoshimo's Special Traps are super effective, very strong traps...especially when they get the hold ability. I haven't found anything they can't kill...including dragons. (There may be something they cant kill but I haven't found it). Plus you can throw them instead of having to walk up and place them. Nothing Jan has can compare to that IMHO.

Well ,throwing traps is good, but you still can't set them during the battle. :(

Hold is also good, but later on you'll get the Otiluke (?) Resilent Sphere and later still (IF you still have Yoshimo) you get Maze, which is kinda annoying by me. But in general his traps are good, very good. :)

BTW, if an enemy wears Mirror Image and steps onto Yoshi's trap (single trap, not a special one), can he save via mirror image ? I know it works the other way around.

Seeing as how you cannot finish the game with Yoshimo: Jan wins by default.

That and his banters are great.

    @ Kulyok
I guess the mirror images will absorb the damage otherwise inflicted by the traps, just as with all other sorts of damage.
Btw, Mirror Image is a great and easy way to counter Abi Dalzims. Funny how a 2nd level spell can nullify one of the 8th level.

In my opinion Jan is the better of the two, simply because he is a mage. Thieves are not that great in combat, backstabbing and traps aside. Mages on the other hand can deal some hefty damage and turn the tide of a fight. Therefor Jan is superior to Yoshi. :p Better in a fight, just as capable of handling all the tasks a thief is there for.

Jan by a mile for me. Yoshi is just annoying and a boring old human. Jan is a colorful gnome and I am going to go out on a limb and say his "flasher" ammo for his special crossbow, while not a big cheat/exploit like Yoshi's traps, is much more entertaining. His special gear in total is pretty damned nifty!

Overall he is probably the most underrated and maligned RPC in BG2 which is enough to make me like him right there!

Also, I still have major problems with Bounty Hunters being 'Thieves' rather than 'Rangers'.
