there is a third choice. If you go to one of the families they will give you a key to th graveyard place and outside the graveyard crypt the mayor(or whatever you call him im a little fuzzy)will stop you and ask you give him the item you get from the crypt.....its what I did because i was of lawfull good alignment and im pretty sure you get a reputation point boost if you give it to the mayor person. But again im kinda fuzzy its been awhile.

Select only one family to go, retrieve the mantle from the crypt near north gate.

Then there lies two ways for you, one is to give the mantle to the mayor, you get one rep point increase as stated above.

Another is to give it to the noble you are siding, however things would turn out to be bloody, two family will direct the sacrifice towards you, after finishing them all, you can loot an Elven Chainmail from Alibakkar IIRC.

If you go with Alibakar then give it to the mayor and then (after giving it to the mayor) go murder the Alibakar man and no one will notice you (so you get the elven chain and the rep ;) .).

Essentially, it doesn't matter who you side with. You can return it to the mayor or it will end in simple bloodshed, in which case choosing sides has no ultimate effect.

I usually go with Alibakar so I can loot his place afterwords. I'd prefer to do this quest the "good" way, but that elven chain is just too nice to miss out on! But, it kinda still is good: two less evil plotting nobles in the Realms!
