    How pathetic.

Gotta love the concept of holding doctrine and dogma over, say, keeping the country from defaulting.

Read about this a bit ago. I'm not happy at all with how inept our government is at dealing with a major issue. In fact, inept isn't hardly a sufficient word.

Is it inept or is it just political posing? The idea I've been given on this far side of the globe is that both sides are just been melodramatic and at last minute will come to some compromise. The title of an opinion piece in the BBC website sums my question up nicely "US Dept Row: A Crisis or a Drama?"

A farce would be more like it. Even having a debt ceiling for congress to vote on seems idiotic. They are effectively playing political games with the credit rating of America. Thankfully this fiasco will end soon enough. Hopefully it won't end with default since that would be a major failure of the American political system but I doubt even the folks at US congress could be that reckless. Right?

Handling this situation shouldn't be this hard or time consuming. Regardless of the motivations (dramatics, posturing, inability to agree, or whatever combo thereof) what we are seeing is an inept government that appears incapable of functioning. EVEN IF they reach an agreement at the final moment... the big long, wasteful ride it has taken to get there will not be overshadowed, at least not for me.

We continue to spend 2B a month more than we make. All the posturing and dramatics only serve to further hurt the country and worsen our situation. I suppose there are a lot of words that could be used to describe the government that is responsible for this debacle. I'm liking inept at the moment, but I'd be fine with reckless, self serving, corrupt, greedy....

Frankly, I'm embarrassed and appalled by the freakshow that is being put on by our politicians. Somehow I don't think this is quite what the founding fathers had in mind.

Sorry Marceror, your numbers a lot low, The US government spends $9.4 Billion a day & is borrowing more than 100 Biilion dollars a month to keep it up.

Check out this site for some really interesting numbers,US Debt Clock
    Debt/person: $46,664
    Debt/taxpayer : $130,121

Frankly, we as a nation need to default. We need to go through bankruptcy as a nation & get our crap straightened out. Even the repub plan the dems hated on so much didnt really have 6 trillion dollars of savings. They way they figure it is if they wanted to raise spending by 15 trillion over that 10 year period & only raised it 11 trillion, TADA! they just "saved 4 trillion" !

Heres an interesting stat for ya, unemployment is officailly ~9.2-9.3 % right?
    Unemployment for black males 16-24 ? C'mon,take a guess
    12%,
    15%
    18%?

    No, more than 30%

    quote source

And yet still, as a group, we keep reelecting the same *******s that have kept us in the same situation for decades.:bang:

You don't go and declare bankruptcy unless you are really bankrupt, and the US is far from that point. As long as US government keeps its credit rating in the highest possible category they really have no problem. The point of spending reductions is to make sure that it won't become a problem in the future either.

The news tonight indicated that some form of compromise on the debt ceiling had been reached?

The budget crisis will probably wreck the economy and the Obama presidency. But isn't that what the Tea Potters wanted? Nevertheless, Obama was an unwitting partner in his own destruction because he refuses to be a real leader. Despite the lessons of history, he has failed to learn about giving in to bad advice. He should have taken heed.

I think Obama lost the chance for that early on, when he was unable to push a more thorough reform with his party in power. Perhaps that's the problem - he never wanted to go all that far. He wanted to make things seem bipartizan for the press photos, and you can't do that unless you water them down... in more than a few cases, drowning them outright ;) .
