Crazy fans risking their lives (and one actually losing it) to grab a baseball? Seems pretty foolish to me.

The case in Texas was remarkably sad. Just a father taking his kid to a baseball game. It wasn't like he was diving over people for that ball. The ball was thrown to him after the third out in the inning was made. So sad.

Also, doing nice thing like returning balls won't cost you your life, but could cost you your shirt. After the guy who caught the Jeter home run for his 3,000th hit, he returned the ball to Jeter. Jeter gave the guy a few signed balls, bats, and jerseys, and also rewarded the guy with four luxury-box seats for all home games for the rest of the year. The problem is that all of that stuff (although mostly the luxury box seats) has a value of nearly $100,000 - and therefore the guy has to pay taxes on it.

Ouch! Aren't gifts up to a certain amount exempt? I guess $100,000 is over the limit eh? :)

After watching it on YouTube it appears the ball was thrown to the guy in the seat next to him who was holding out his glove ready to catch it, then this guy barges in front of him leans out too far and falls :(

Maybe they shouldn't throw balls to fans like this.

From what was reported, you're allowed to give someone a one-time gift of up to $60,000 and an annual gift of up $12,000. So yeah, anything above $60K counts as income.

EDIT: A little more research (and Snook is probably the guy to ask here) shows that the signed memorabelia is NOT taxable because it's not considered a liquid asset. He would only have to claim it as income if and when he sells it. OTOH, the luxury box is considered a perishable asset (in that they must be used at a specific date and time this calendar year) and thus count as income.

People who deal in sports items like this said that the guy could have sold the ball for up the $250K. So he did the nice thing by giving it back to Jeter. No good deed goes unpunished.

Please, no. If the day comes when a baseball player is prohibited by law or internal policy from tossing a ball into the stands because a fan might do something stupid and be killed, the game will have fundamentally changed to the point where it is no longer a game/pasttime/entertainment, but a sponsored 'activity' like school recess. It's sad, but sh*t is going to happen, no matter what we do. You can't protect everybody from everything, least of all themselves.
