I would have been so cool to have horses and thing, which you could buy from a stable type place, with different qualities and abilities. You could have a grey charger for your paladin, and a mule for Jan!

I would also have let them add interesting things like lances, wouldn't you have loved that! but i guess it was not to be, I'm sure you could have tethered the horses or indeed any other steed they had outside the dungeons and caves before entering.

That would be pretty cool. A bit like the chocobos in the FF games. But i suppose horses belong in Ultima online... :(

well, we can only hope they implement something like it in future games

Granted, steeds would be great, but think of how complex the designers would have to make mounted battle.

I don't know if it was in the manual or online faqs but I've read mounted characters drastically changed the mechanics of combat, was unworkable and hence was left out even though AD&D supplied rules.

This was my very first Topic!

In fact there is No such thing as a cavalier without a horse. A cavalier means mounted warrior. Oh well back to dreaming I guess.

It USED to mean mounted warrior. According to Oxford's:

    cavalier n. & adj.

    — n.
1 hist. (Cavalier) a supporter of Charles I in the Civil War.
    2 a courtly gentleman, esp. as a lady's escort.
    3 archaic a horseman.

    Mmmh, no horses for me...

What do they add to my roleplaying game? Nothing. Most of the battles are in cellars or other narrow places. Could my horse get in there too? Must it wear two pairs of the Boots of Speed?
There would be one thing I could need it for: Sacrifice to the DemiGorgon to summon the Demon Knights....

Cavalier has the same root as the French Chevalier, which literally means horseman. I guess the link to a nobleman is because it would be the nobles who were able to provide their own horses for use on the battlefield, while the peasants fought on foot. I don't know where the idea of a Cavalier being a type of Paladin originally came from, any ideas anyone?

The idea of the Cavalier probably came in European myths during the Middle Ages, what with the noble knight rescuing the fair princess on his loyal steed from the foul dragon, and then living happily ever after with a small kingdom of their own.

So long as they didn't unbalance it, it would be pretty cool. Especially in the shops.

Horses would be very cool, but they'd have to work out stuff like getting knocked off your horse, your horse getting killed, fighting enemies with horses when you're stuck on the ground, :p etc.
About that whole cavalier thing, they probably got the name for the paladin because cavaliers are knights, and so are paladins-it makes sense. The one that makes no sense as a paladin is the Inquisitor-s/he's not the type to rescue damsels in distress, s/he'd just kill all the bad guys, interrogate the damsel, and leave her for some good people to rescue her.

I thought inquistors would have been Neutral in bg2. I would have had them as Finders Of The Truth and so be True Neutral. anyway.

Dwarfs could ride donkeys! it would be SO cool!

  15. C'Jakob Guest

Think of an Inquisitor as a good guy and thus a paladin, but overzealous and less tolerant of other "heathen". He also dislikes "heathen" arcane magic, and thus has True Sight, Dispel Magic, etc.

[IMG] yes i agree.. that would be very cool.. though it would bring many new aspects to the game.. and possibly get annoying having to dismount every 5 mins to enter buildings, dungeons etc..

Someone could try and make a centaur character, that way you wouldn't have to dismount because it would be like chopping your back end off. Anyway horses would be cool as you would be able to buy them armour, buy a horse-helm with a unicorn spike or something. In one country Cavalier means 'Noble Paladin' so thats where it comes from.

[IMG] yer and depending on how much money you have would mean how good the stats were, cool. Buying armour and mounted accesories for them would be so fun, and they could carry extra stuff from adventuring, like pack horses!

[IMG] It would be a great idea. Just imagine, how many possibilities. For example, you want to rest in an inn, so you "park" your horse in the front of the inn, and in the morning, your horse is gone, it was solen. It would be very interesting. And there are some places in Athaca, where this could happen(Sea Bounty in the dock district).
