Tough question. Sandwiches deserve to be a foods group of their own, imo. :)

    Buttered bread, chicken, olives.
Bread, cheese, fresh tomatoes and cucumbers, lettuce.
Bread, paprikas in cream with or without olives.
Bread, chicken, mustard, ketchup and onions.
Buttered bread and cucumbers (fresh, not pickled).

Urnebes (ground, dry red paprika in oil + white cheese) as a layer with anything.

Depends on the mood and season. At the moment, a favourite would be chicken, cucumbers and lettuce... I think.

I'm not a big bread eater, so I don't really go for sandwiches much. That said, I'll never turn down a BLT with mayonnaise.

Either Rare Roast Beef & Horseradish (M&S) or Hoisin Duck wrap from just about anywhere (but especially Pret a Manger, if I feel the need to take out a 2nd mortgage!). :yum:

I agree Rags, toast is for those with no taste buds left. I love a great roll or bread that has constitution. I really like a nice fat, heavy pumpernickel for a sandwich. Add some Roast Beef(rare if possible), Horsey and a bit of L&T and I'm good to go.

I actually don't think Subway is that bad - I don't eat there regularly, and I'd always prefer a proper sandwich shop over a Subway, but they will do in a pinch.

As for a general sandwich that you can get just about anywhere, I'd vote for a regular Italian hoagie - which usually consists of some combination of the following: Ham, Salami, Pepperoni, Pastrami. Usually I will add provolone cheese (although I much prefer pepper jack if available), with all the usual toppings - especially jalepenos.

Hot Pepper cheese = "Diablo" style, yummy!

The Italian Hoagie, the standard Philly sandwich. Mild Provolone, Ham, Capicola, Proscuitto. I prefer an older, more "authentic" version of Sharp Provy, Hot or Dryed Capicola, Hot Proscuitto and Genoa Salami. And of course, Lettuce, Tomato,Onion, S&P and Itilian Seasonings. Also with Oil & Vinegar, hold the mayo.

My old school houses a cafeteria that serves a bagel with salmon, caper, lettuce and chives (oh and onions. I remove those before their taste spreads). I still visit that place for that bagel even though I graduated and now study in a different city.

Completely forgot about the Porscuitto - and blasphemous oversight on my part.

Of course, for the standard Philly sandwich, that's got to the be cheese steak, right? And if we're talking Philly, the only real question is Gino's or Pat's? (I prefer Pat's, but I know people who swear by Gino's.)

Yeah, the Cheesesteak is the standard hot sandwich, and Pat's blows away Gino's in my opinion, though Gino's is pretty good too. I just love Pat's steaks. Nothing like a night of clubbing and then going to Pat's at 3 in the morning and waiting in line for 45 minutes because there is literally 50 people ahead of you in line. This happens all year round, even when it's freezing.

The Italian Hoagie I would call the standard hoagie in Philly though. Try Primo's, they have a great selection. The original store in South Philly has "The Viagra, it takes longer to eat". The meat is Hard Salami... lol! That is no joke by the way.

The best sandwich shop I've ever eaten at was Primanti Brothers. I think they are only located in Pittsburgh. Excellent Italian sandwich.

Dark brown bread ("Ragusa-style") with bacon, salami and old Gouda, non-toasted. Perhaps with some Iceberg lettuce, mayonnaise and some black pepper and maybe some olive's.

Unless the Surinam-Hindustan "Bara" is considered a sandwich, too. Cause that really is my favorite! Especially with Pom or Ajam Masala (sort of chicken curry).
But most of you probably have no idea what I'm talking about... *sigh*

    My fathers favorite sandwich

I can still remember my Dad standing in the kitchen making his favorite red radish sandwich. He would slice the radishes about 1/4 inch thick and place them on liberally buttered soft white and then salt it all. Then he would say "this sandwich is from the gods" I never could get into them.
