Ha ha! What an odd twist of events. Iceland has banned stripping. I mean, wow! Some spots in Europe have legalized brothels, but in Iceland you can't even look, let alone touch!

    I found this part interesting:

I would have thought liberal social values = lots of stripping and prostitution and such "if she wants to do it, let her!" sort of thing, but I would have been wrong.

If this is the result of having lots of women in government positions, then I vote for more men in the Parliament!! ;)

Thoughts, preferably starting with serious ones and then devolving into jokes as usual.

Stripping is the job a women can fall back on to make a bit of cash, expecially while in college or after college when trying to pay the bills and the student loans. Why ban it? It's the new "waitress" job of the old days. It's a Stupid law.

There is nothing shocking about banning stripping. It's a cultural thing really but over here most people don't go to strip clubs. It's not something that we do... at least in France, the shows in Paris are for foreigners really.

We don't have hooters either. :shake:

There are some states in the US that have done the same, I think. Probably Utah. They still have 'strip clubs', but they're more like 'almost-strip clubs', where the women wear stickers and the like under it all. Like Caradhras, I'm not that surprised, though I am a little surprised it was women who enacted the law. Like LKD, I'd expect they'd want options open to women in tough times. Sure, they may think it's demeaning, but women who need the money that bad could still benefit, and some women enjoy the attention (not by any means saying it's most, or that those who do are well balanced, but they exist). I mean, I think being a butler is demeaning, but I'm not about to advocate banning it.

Stripping is more or less non-existant here as well. Do not think it is illegal but there are very few clubs and it is not a socially accepted past time or job. Being a stripper is viewed as little different from being a prostitute. It is a cultural thing I guess and I don't feel strongly one way or the other. I do know that I would personally feel dirty and sleazy if I ever went to a strip club (which probably also would add some extra spice to the thing).

I think this is mainly true in the US. I am pretty sure Icelands educational system works a lot like scandinavias, which means student loans (if any) are a lot smaller then in the US.
I for one with be done with my bachelor this summer, going on to my master, and have no student loans (or rich parrents), but I life in an evil socialist country with free education and universal health care :p

as for banning stripping, I am against it, if a woman or man wants to make money by taking of their cloth for other people, I say let them. (don't forget there are male strippers too)

    From the article:

Seems like the strippers that want to keep their source of income intact (for whatever reasons beyond the obvious economical ones) need to become private entrepreneurs and it's business as usual again?

While I don't care for such shows myself, I don't exactly like the condemnation and criminalization route either. Attacking the social acceptance of such is deemed to have much better results than forcing it to go underground. Just assuming it will cease to exist just because it isn't legal is wishfull thinking.

This also reminds me of the propaganda war waged against a bill that would have forced unemployed females into applying for stripper jobs or face losing their unemployment benefits. :whoa: And THAT was a rather.. unforeseen consequence of granting stripteasery the same status as any other job. Can't remember where or when, but I'm hazarding a guess with Germany, sometime year 2005-2006?

Lots of female groups have this view, they like to fight men who tell women how they can behave or use their bodies, but then when given power they themselves tell women how to behave and use their bodies.

I can understand why they would want a ban on strippers. I've heard the arguments both ways and think both sides have merit. Besides, it's been many years since I've been to a strip club and wouldn't be inconvienced in the least -- on the flip side, in the immortal words of Ron White, 'Some friends of mine asked me if I wanted to go to a strip club, and I didn't... want to go. But I ended up going 'cause- back me up on this, fellas- once you've seen one woman naked, you... pretty much wanna see the rest of 'em naked.'

A stupid decision IMO. I may be wrong, but I always thought a large part of their economy was their nightlife.

I thought for a moment you said 'thong,' not 'thing,' and was confused as to how you would know the spicyness level of someone's thong if you weren't into that kinda thing...

... Spicy thongs? That sounds... painful. :o
I'm sorry, but I don't want anything burning down there and I doubt most ladies would either.

Spicy doesn't necessarily imply chili. ;) Whaddya know, maybe rosemary, thyme or even dill would make a nice match? Or definitely calamansi (think 'lime' in far east asia) if you're looking for something sweet? Going along with the fish theme here.

I'm an Icelander and when this was on the news I was like: "Huh? Whatever". Never been to a strip club anyway. Although I still think this is a step backwards and don't really see how they are promoting women's rights.

I actually don't think strip clubs were that much of an income. I think there were somewhere around like 5 maybe strip clubs here, although it's a complete wild guess. Maybe I'm just completely clueless and there existed a bunch more. But somehow I doubt that, since the population is only about 300000.

Pornography is illegal in Iceland but I don't think anybody follows that rule. You can walk into a book store and buy pornographic magazines just like any other magazines.

Now what I really want to see is the separation of the Church and the State. The parliament should be focusing on something like that and not utterly pointless things like stripping.

Well, if you're going for a fish theme, I was thinking along the lines of wasabi...

Yeah, I'm with you on this one. Never been, don't want to go, but don't see a legal reason to shut them down, either. I see a moral one, but that's not law in the US at least. I don't know, maybe if the people of Iceland are massively morally conservative in this area (pornography in general), I could understand. I never got the impression they were, though.

Well, I have been to strip clubs, but I certainly don't frequent them, and like T2B, I haven't been to one in ages. Mostly, the only time I go to them is for things like bachelor parties and the like. In fact, that's the only time I can ever remember going to them. I'm sure there are regulars at those places, but I cannot imagine most guys make going to a strip club part of their regular, weekend routine. Get a girlfriend or three if you're into that kind of stuff.

Having said that, even though they don't make their moeny from people like me, I see no reason to ban them either. It's not like we're forcing women to do it, and it's not like we're forcing men to go*, so what's the big deal?

    * Yes, I know there are male strippers as well, who perform for women, but I have to think that the ratio of female to male strippers is at least 10 to 1.

There certainly are career strip club patrons (certainly in the states anyway), and I mean guys who must spend tons of money over the long haul on them. No doubt this solid and constant revenue base is partly why they're so lucrative and prevalent.

Also bear in mind that women themselves frequent strip clubs more and more nowadays, in addition to there being male strip clubs for women and male strip clubs targeted for men (though these last remain in the 'niche' category due to persistent social norms). I wonder if Iceland wants to shut them all down.

The father of my best friends owns several strip joints in the Philadelphia area. My friends, once graduated from High School, went into business with dad. So, I can say I have been to my share. I ran my pool teams out one of their places. For 7 years. Got drink specials and they fed us. Good times! Especially when they were serving the teams hot dogs!:D
