[IMG]Hear Gamasutra cry that Turbine has made Dungeons & Dragons Online free to play! This doesn't mean giving up the coin for old subscribers will be upgraded to a special VIP status, while new players can join the programme for the same amount as the old fee was. Playing itself will be free, however. Players will also have the opportunity to earn redeemable credits in game. Here's a snip:

Though DDO has existed on a $14.95 per month subscription model since its 2006 launch, the upgrade, titled Eberron Unlimited -- which is itself free -- migrates the game to a microtransactions-based model, by which users can purchase additional content and items in the new "DDO Store."

Specifically, the store's currency is "Turbine Points," and players can either buy or earn them in-game. The new DDO Unlimited will also offer a "VIP Program" as an alternative, through which players receive some in-game money and access to all classes, races, in-game lands and extended character slots.

What do you make of it? Will it work? Is it good? What about players being able to buy not only additional dungeons or other areas to visits, but actually in-game money or items for real life money? Isn't that too OOC? On the other hand, how does it stand vis-a-vis the monetary needs of a publisher that needs to stay in business and make profit? The space below is near-unlimited.

If something like this works for Guild Wars, why not. More and more developers think that games will only subscribe to one but still play others. he one being WoW.

I played Guild wars for the sole reason that it had no fees. I got more than enough gaming hours out of it for the money I paid. I never finished any plot but still had a lot of single player fun.

In general I strongly disagree with micro-transactions for in game benefits that go beyond the simply cosmetic.
However, now that it's free to play I might actually start playing the game, albeit rather casually. So, not really sure what to make of this...

I'll be interested to see how it works out, and I may even find myself giving it a go when it becomes free to play.

There went my awesome thread. Still is it any good? I remember mixed reviews.

[Your thread is in the D&DO forum now, actually. -Tal]
