Age of Wonders, part I, a very enjoyable game. 4 each of good, neutral and evil races to smash your foes, make alliances, use magic, build armies and just plain old conquer the planet with. Anybody else out there enjoy this game? I know its a little dated, but i purchased it last year and seem to keep revisiting it.

I played a lot of that one. Not so much lately, though.

I enjoyed the first one quite much. I have not played the sequels and I got the impression that they are not as good.

I liked playing the first Age of Wonders game, but I didn't really like the second one as much I liked the first one. The studio making the games is located close by, in Delft, and in recent years they're working on a series of games called Overlord. I know one of the people who works for them as a tester and he liked the game very much.

I really enjoyed part I, but part 2 changed the graphics and gameplay in a way that made the game not as enjoyable. We could use a few more games with better depth, options and weaker graphics. The gameplay to me is the best, i don't need Super-3D graphics with zoom-in/out camera modes. I particularly liked the 2 8-player scenarios that came with the game, the ones outside of the campaign itself.

There are several unofficial work-overs out there. The most comprehensive of them (and the one on which several subsequent mods are based upon) is Warlock's Ruleset. It changes a lot of creature stats and abilities.

There's also a ruleset changer that allows you to switch between Warlock's and the original.

I really liked this game and its mechanics, kinda like combining Heroes of Might and Magic with RTS and with a good enough story and world so that you can even play it RPG-like. The spells and creatures, the managing of towns and exploration, the planning of battle tactics and spell combinations... the sheer difficulty of that level where you have to have Merlin learn Death magic from the dead brother.
Downside is the effects and how heroes are both overpowered and underpowered. I actually like the graphics, the game just needs better effects to make those top class. Still, I'd probably want the option to turn them of when I want.

The first game looked very nice, I enjoyed playing it a lot. I have not played the second too much, though it reminded me a bit of Master of Magic.
