Are "The Chronicles of Amber" any good?

I started reading/listening to the first book yesterday and am almost at the end, I really like it so far, but would hate to be disappointed later on :) How did you guys like it?

I thought the first series was excellent -- all five books. The second series was good, just not up to the same standard as the first (also five books).

The first series focuses on Corwin, the second on his son Merlin.

I never made it through the first. But I've heard enough 'don't bother with Amber, go read Lord of Light' comments to ensure I'll read the latter at some point.

If you liked the beginning then you won't be disappointed (quite the contrary). ;)

Amber has its weaknesses. Overall it is quite good.

The concept is nice and usable for tv without going to LoTR budgets.

I'm with T2, I preferred the books focusing on Corwin.

Lord of Light was certainly interesting as well but I didn't quite get into it as so many other people did. Not a bad attempt to put a sci-fi spin on classic fantasy/mythology though. Up until now, the only sci-fi book that I will say is a must-read is still just Ender's Game.

Most tv/cinema junkies will have problems whit the Ender books. Some books you just have to see in your head to understand. There is a spin-off book about one of the other characters from the first one.
