[IMG] It can be an unusual form of cruelty for sure

If the girl was that ashamed of her name then surely her parents would have noticed. So either the girl wasn't that upset by it or the parents ignored it so they could have their own little joke.

Overall it's a name she has to live with, so she should be able to change it as she wishes.

And i thought the names that some of the parents here in the states gave their kids were weird!

Sometimes parents use their children's names to make a political or social statement -- I heard of one family 15 years or so ago that gave their child a name with hundreds of letters for the express purpose of confusing the government database.

I think that's ignorant -- your children are not tools to be used to make statements, they are living human beings who deserve dignity and respect. While I am not a fan of the government interfering in parenting, this case is IMHO serious enough to warrant some judicial intervention.

Heh, I read that story yesterday and was going to put it here, but I thought it was pretty trivial. Apparently not.

According to a comment here, however, it's apparently not true. Which is rather disappointing, because I had liked "Keenan Got Lucky". :D

And if you think these names are weird, look at celebrities' kids - Moon Unit, anyone?

Yeah, the article I linked says those names were blocked by registration officials.

But Dick Pound gets to keep his name. How many teenage boys read the Steroid articles just to snicker at his name?

I used to have a neighbours who had a child named Malice. The boy and his sister lived with their grandmother because both mother and father ended up in jail for different reasons. I met their mother when she was still living with them and she was an "easy meat for drugs" type of woman. I can just imagine what the father was like. After the mother was gone, the grandmother decided to send Malice to a catholic school and the teachers and principal of the school wouldn't call him by his real first name because they felt it wasn't appropriate. He was a nice enough boy when he was little but I'm afraid that with his background he will grow into his name.

    Hah,
I was present as an acolyte when a catholic priest baptising a girl without a proper Christian name resolutely added a 'Maria' (or Mary as we're English speaking here) in the middle. It was hilarious, the faces of the parents. And imo he was absolutely right. Who's the patron saint of a 'Flower Rose'? (The names were actually different, but I don't recall.)

As for allowable names, Germany has restrictions on what's allowed:

You can mave five names at max. Names must be recognisable as names - so no flowers or apples. No swearwords as names, and nothing that in great likelihood will make the Child a mockery in school. Names must be identifiable as male or female (which is softened up a bit through immigration, Andrea for instance is in German female, in Italian male). Doctor of Professor, General and the like are also not allowed. If you think such rules are pedantic and ridiculous, read BTA's link and think again. It spares the courts work and the taxpayer money, and apparently it has the potential to help keeping families of foolish parents intact.
Whether a name is allowable is in the discretion of the Standesamt, based on the above rules. They will simply refuse to name a child in such a way.

Those cases do deserve court intervention IMO (and what's with these celebs. coming up with wacky names?), I'd hate to be named 'Max Plays the Sax"!. There are names that are based on 'words' and not 'names' that are actually appropriate though, and others that fit together but not by themselves. For example, a friend of a co-worker of mine is named Danger, to me that sounds pretty ingenious for a name! I am an other example, my middle name is Power, but goes with my first; Max (or at least people tell me).

Crap like this is due to bad legislation that allows moronic names in the first place; fix that and the problem goes away. Dealing with it after the fact and on a case by case basis is a waste of time, effort and money and only serves to give attention to the immature parents who get their kicks out of making the names of their children into a <insert agenda here> statement without the regard for the children themselves. We've had quite a few cases of such stupid names here too, and they're almost invariably given to children by "celebrity" parents.

And punish the parents for doing it by removing the child. Stable parents name their children normally.

Perhaps parents should get a exam before procreating?

If the child was really that embarrased by the name, then it does suggest woefully uncaring parents, and I support it completely. I don't like the idea of judges just renaming children because they don't like a ridiculous name, but in this case, I think it's deserved.

Weirdest name I've ever come across was Zephyr Moon Rising.

Name most likely to belong to a porn star (I checked the guy's ID, so I know he wasn't making it up :p): Harry Sacks.

Malice, as Dragonfly wrote about, is IMO a cool name because of the (obvious to me) connection to Matron Malice in R.A. Salvatore's Drizzt books. But not a name suited for a boy.

Violence, as the article mentions, is also a pretty name IMO.

As for myself, I'd probably want to give my child a slightly unique first name, but nothing outrageous, and then give more special middle names, like Jarlaxle, for example.

I knew a guy who legally changed his middle name to 'Danger', which was pretty cool for a select few occasions.
"Talula Does The Hula From Hawaii" though, that's hilarious.

On Facebook there was a group that a guy created to get his wife to allow him to call his kid Spiderpig. He needed 10,000 people to join and he got there. Even scanned the birth certificate and put it on there. Not sure if it is truly legit but he spent a lot of time campaigning so it could be true.

Those poor kids. Names like that would make them the subject of teasing for YEARS.
