    [IMG]What we asked:

Q: Do you prefer combat, story or an even mix of both in roleplaying games?
    (628 votes total)

Story first, combat second (330) 53%
Even mix of both (269) 43%
Combat first, story second (29) 5%

Not at all surprisingly, the majority of you (53%) prefer the story first and combat second in RPGs.

However, a great number of the poll participants (43%) enjoy an even mix of both in the RPGs they play.

Only 5% of those who have voted prefer combat in RPGs first, and the story second.

Considering the games SP focuses on the results seem hardly surprising :)

I admit I would have expected "mix of both" to win, as all the featured games heavily feature combat. I think it interesting that the gap between "story only" and "both" is pretty significant.

I think that most people voting for story only weren't being completely honest.

This puts me in mind of Ultima veterans who complained that the Baldur's Gate games were too combat-oriented... :shake: probably just because the battles weren't a complete dog's dinner!

What I would have liked to vote for was not so much a focus on story, but on being in a world: freedom of movement and exploration. BG did this so much better than its sequel. The story sort of creeps up on you, and its twists and turns feel much more authentic as a result. You only get those sort if worlds in TES games nowadays, but of course it was the Ultimas that really first made this their USP.

I like a game that has a good story, lots of places to explore and not just dungeon crawls, banter, intricate relationships which might be romances but can just be friends or enemies. Of course fighting is important but I like some strategy included. I also enjoy intelligent puzzles that play fair...either the information is contained in the game or is something that a reasonably intelligent person can figure out. The more choices and potential outcomes a game has the better I like it.
