Is there any way to beat this section without having to sacrifice myself or a party member?

For some reason the demon targets my "created" Monk. My character is a Ranger and the rest of the 4 are NPC's . I changed the marching order - no luck he always targetted the Monk for the hold spell. I then dismissed the Monk but then the demon assumes I have no one in my party and summons a peasant.

I've read about the contigency method but since my monk is always targetted ...

    Any suggestions?

    From Beren's walkthrough:

My praises and thanks to Ard, who is quoted in Dan Simpson’s FAQ. You can perform the good path without any sacrifice. Enter here once, and note which character gets stolen away. Reload the game, and equip that character with Boots of Speed. Try again. Now have that character run right away for the door to the west. Once it reaches the door, the Demon is satisfied and you’ve completed the good path to the Tear of Bhaal.

Alternatively, you can cast SI: Divination (might be a different SI, it's been a while), and take the good path. The SI makes you immune to the negative effects normally associated with the good path.

the problem with the boots of speed is that my character is held almost immediately with no time to pause and make a run for it

bear in mind that a monk cant be hasted - een with the boots because he's naturally faster

The boots of speed works every time for me. I just hit space the second I get control of my characters and go from there.

Isn't cheating around the selfish test ... ummm ... selfish?

You're a ranger dammit -- either sacrifice or become fallen.

The order of targetting is the order the characters joined the party. You can dismiss all but one (that one being a mage). If the mage has a contigency of casting dispel magic when immobilized the spell of the demon will be broken and the target can leave without any loss. I guess this is cheating, but I view rangers as the ultimate Boy Scouts (Be Prepared) and being prepared is a part of the game....
