So I decided to solo an evil monk through the game.

I'm up to Ust Natha, and I'm at level 18. I can't figure out how to finish the "save Phaere" quest. As soon as the Flayers and Umber Hulks appear, I end up confused and ripped to shreds before I can do anything useful.

I have 19STR (hill giant girdle), 18DEX, 18CON, 4INT, 9WIS*, and 18CHA. My THAC0 is -7 (I think), and my AC is about the same. My saving rolls vary between about 1 and 5 due to various trinkets, and my magic resistance is 59, due to the amulet I picked up in the Shadow Thieves guild. I have a few invisibility potions but nothing else of use.

Am I completely screwed, or is there something I have to do first?

    * It might be 9INT and 4WIS, I don't really pay attention to those stats.

Well, you need to pump up your wisdom for the confusions, you can also rent a dominated servant then drink the potions, so your servant will be torn to pieces, while you tear up the umber hulks and mindflayers while invisible.

How many INT points do the Mind Flayers drink? IIRC three. Do try quaffing a few potions of Genius.

    I´m just wondering...
Is it "Ring of Human Influence" that gives you 18 in Char or did you actually spend points on it during creation? Cuz I´d much rather raise Wis than Char in your case. Alittle too late now though.

I set CHA at 18 during creation... I figured there are better rings out there (i.e. protection +2, regeneration) that I could be wearing. Looking back, it seems pretty stupid.

Not so stupid as your charisma determines how everyone reacts to you. There are also some classes where charisma is a prime requisite (bards come to mind). Hindsight is 20/20. Just keep lots of potions of genius handy (or don't take on any mind flayers). :)

Try using your innate stunning blow ability to stun as many enemies as possible. Quivering palm can also be used to kill one target if it fails to save vs death.

You can try going invisible and have all the monsters attack Phaere and Solaufein (so you can run around stunning them with stunning blow)... but I'm not too sure how durable they are. It's risky because once they die, the quest is failed.

If Phaere gets her spells off successfully, her flame strike spell is quite powerful - enough to kill one mind flayer.

[IMG] Blog, that info is ToB related. As this is the SoA forum I suggest you refrain from referring to it again.

    And I'm nitpicking :p

And quivering palm is received at 13th level (quick reference at Sorcerer's Guide to Kits ), which is easily attainable within the SoA experience cap.

Spelladonna > He isn´t a bard now. How much does an evil monk care what other people think of him. And how is he supposed to not take on any mind flayers when he has to do this "quest" to proceed in the game.

Unless you decide to kill all the drows in Ust Natha and just take the freakkin´ egs from the chamber =) That might actually give you more experience since you´re playing solo btw. I´m pretty sure it will.

Damnit, I always manage to make huge mistakes. I was thinking HLAs, but I think I'll just shut up now...

Toilet, there are always around even the most difficult situation. Try been in a different place when they first appear. Or maybe try buying some or potions before leaving the city.

you could use a greenstone amulet (prot. psonics)
Summon some creatures before the battle (efreity bottle, staff of earth controll etc.)
make use of special abilities (ring of air controll - improved invis)
Mindflayers cannot dispell invis. and cannot target you with spells.

This should take care of it providing you have required items, esp. ring of air controll.
